HappyBird's Journal & Journey

Post by HappyBird »

After struggling since 3/4July with what I now believe to be re-accuring flare ups of MC, I finally found, with some help, my way to this forum. After reading as much as possible and learning from members I embarked, albeit, tentatively on an elimination diet. This is my fourth attemp after making cardinal errors not excluding EF, DF, MF except for turkey. I have in the previous start to this discovered the NSAID Ketaprofen is part of my problem.

Jen,

Antihistamines will not affect the EnteroLab test results, but avoiding foods will eventually affect the results. The sooner the test is done after making diet changes, the more accurate the results will be.

Thanks Tex...........

I'll contact Enterolab today and get their sample dispatched soon. Its going on two months now on my restricted diet - hope that is still fine. There is not much chance of me eating things that upset me just to get a result.

The tests will probably still catch your food sensitivities. The longer we react, the higher our antibody levels climb, and therefore the longer it takes for the antibody levels to decline to normal levels after we begin avoiding those foods. After 3 or 4 months of avoiding those foods, the risk of a false negative test result increases.

Thanks Tex........

I'm well within the 3-4months on my elimination diet, started on 1/9/15. The tests will be an interesting exercise hopefully pointers to some things I need to avoid.

I wish I knew a very good Homeopathic Practitioner near me. I used to see Dr. Heinricksen years ago - he told me to avoid whole wheat, grains etc. At that time I had to hold two metal tubes in my hands and quite frankly I didn't take much notice because his equipment resembled something out of a Victorian museum.
I'ma bit sorry now.

Today someone phoned me from York Testing to say that they recommended I take the package testing my blood sample for 138 common food and beverage ingredients. I opted for the speedy reply so should have results by early next week.

That is exactly what happened to me. Apparently it was one of the fastest positive tests they had ever seen! Hope you get the answers back quickly. If my memory serves me right, they rang me to tell me that the official printed results were enroute to me via royal mail, but they did tell me what I had reacted to over the phone too.

The one thing I didn't take them up on though is the dietician, but only because the person I spoke to admitted that the dieticians that work for them have next to no experience with dealing with IBD.

When they offered a consultation with the Nutritional Therapist I asked if they were Registered Dietitians and whether I could have a Skype consultation rather than a phone consultation and this was the reply :

"All of our Nutritional Therapists are fully qualified and are BANT registered. Unfortunately our Nutritional Therapists do not use Skype so it would need to be a telephone consultation."

Registered Dietitians are registered and regulated by the Health Care Professions Council (HSPC) and the BANT Nutritional Therapists are registered with Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). HSPC is aligned to medical profession and CNHC to complmentary medicine such as homeopathy.

I'm not sure how helpful a phone call will be, Skype would be better because of the face to face experience. I might also just say no on the grounds it will be very impersonal and therefore not helpful. Why they don't offer a face to face consultation with someone in your area surprises me and I'll tell them that too in the fullness of time. They may be shocked - who cares!

Maybe that type of telephone sales solicitations is accepted and common in the UK, but here in the States it would be considered to be an overly aggressive sales tactic, designed to take unfair advantage of vulnerable individuals. Legitimate laboratories do not call patients attempting to sell them additional tests — that's not kosher.

You can bet that they make that same sales pitch to everyone who orders any tests from them. And the actual value of their nutritional therapist consultations probably ranges from negligible to zero. If you don't believe me, try it and see how many supplements they try to sell you. And if you try the supplements, be sure to take note of how long it takes for a relapse of MC symptoms to occur. Those folks are in the game to make money, not to help patients.

But of course that's just my cynical, unprofessional opinion.

Tex- they ring you to tell you the results at the same moment they send out the letter confirming the results. I can also confirm from experience that they don't try to push anything on you or sell you supplements and you can chose to not do any further testing at all with them. Not once was it a solicitation call. Nothing was forced and they listen to what you have to say. Personally I asked if I could think over the weekend as to if I wanted further testing and they told me to take as long as I wanted.

They just include a dietician in the package because it can be difficult to access dietitians here. I also happen to know someone who works as a dietician there and they would rather do face to face consultations too apparently. Also a lot of them used to be HSPC registered when they worked for the NHS, yet many lack experience with IBD's.

And as a final point, I've also known a lot of non IBD friends be refered to this company for testing by many GPs which to me does suggest that there is some level
Of support for the company and what it does.
