Several issues

Post by JMulkey »

So, am attempting to go off of Entecort for the first time in three years. Not having a good time. Can that cause dizziness? I've weaned down very slowly and haven't had one in a week and am just dizzy as all get out. Also, started taking slippery elm bark. It seems to make the D worse. However, just checked and I'm taking the capsule and it has magnesium stearate in it. Can that be what's making the D worse instead of the slippery elm? I know the slippery elm is doing something because I haven't had that pain in my left upper side that has been with me for three years. Just feeling like crap (forgive the pun).

Also am going to try a few probiotics, have taken Culturelle and I think it might have helped a little, but not sure.

Am just so tired of this, and I cannot exist on chicken, sweet potatoes and green beans for the rest of my natural life. Those are literally the three things I have foudn that I can eat. And sorry but I'm just worn out, tired, no energy, all of that and more.

Have you tried an antihistamine? Have you tried a bile acid sequestrant? Sometimes these work, when there is no reason for remaining symptoms. Try them one at a time though, not together, so that you can tell which one might be helping.

If an antihistamine is going to help, you should see some improvement within a day or 2. A bile acid sequestrant may take longer to show results (if bile acid malabsorption is the reason for continuing D).

I have taken antihistamines for years for allergies and I see no change at all in my D with or without. The other you said? I'm not sure what that is, but will go look it up. Do you think I'm reacting to the magnesium stearate? The D today has been horrible.

Check out this long discussion (6 pages so far) on bile acid malabsorption:

More on Bile Acids (an important piece of the MC puzzle?)

Magnesium sterate shouldn't cause any problems.

Tex, I went and read all of that thread and then called my gastro. He said yes, they have used that Cholestyramine for a while now and are having pretty good results with it, so he has given me a small supply to try out. Thank you for sending me that way. Keep your fingers crossed that this is my problem too, because I can't live on chicken, sweet potatoes and green beans the rest of my life.

JMulkey,

I'll be very interested to see how you do on the cholestyramine. It may take a few weeks to find out the correct dose.

I hear ya about the limited diet. I have had MC for 15 years now, treated with a very limited diet. So you can imagine my surprise when I have been able to add in new foods since going on cholestyramine. Don't try it immediately, though. Good luck!

Thanks DJ, Jen, and Vanessa,

I appreciate the kind words (and the flowers ). I think what inspires me is memories of how sick I was for so long, together with the feeling of utter hopelessness that began when my GI specialist told me there was nothing he could do for me. After I got over that letdown, like most of us, I started looking for solutions, and I reckon I'll continue to look for solutions for as long as I can.

Thanks,
Tex

Jim,

You're most welcome. I hope that very soon your symptoms will be fading away, so that you can begin to enjoy life again.
