Does coconut help control diarrhea?
I just read on the Internet that many people have had success with coconut.
MC diagnosed 2007
Hello. I have read online that raw coconut does help to control D. I was drinking coconut water because I wanted something besides plain water but after a few days it bound me up so I would guess that it would help with D, too. I also had some coconut butter that I bought for a recipe and when I used it on sweet potatoes it had the same effect on me so I think any type of coconut would stop D with me. Our bodies are all different but if I ever have D I will definitely break out the coconut water.

When I was first diagnosed with MC, and complained about the cost of Entocort, my GI doctor told me that one of his patients had success controlling diarrhea by eating two coconut macaroons a day. I tried that, and it really helped. This was before I found the PP and learned of the diet connection with gluten, etc. I didn't like the sweetness of macaroons, so soon switched to eating a tablespoon of dried shredded coconut every morning. It definitely helped reduce the amount of D I had. I don't eat the coconut regularly any more since I'm better, but do still use coconut oil and coconut milk in cooking.

Interesting! I do know that coconut has antimicrobial properties (or antifungal, anyway), due to the caprylic acid. I wonder if maybe it helps those whose D is triggered by yeast problems? I drink coconut milk and water plus use coconut oil but haven't noticed any difference in my D. I'll have to start eating the shredded stuff and see if that helps. Makes sense that maybe the fiber in coconut meat would bind up some of our excess liquid.
