I agree with Gabes about genes. It is very helpful to know your genetics to know your weak spots and be proactive. I also believe that while we can't change our genetic code, we can prevent aberrant genes from expressing or "turning on" and we may be able to actually "turn them off", if they have been turned on, with the proper treatment and lifestyle choices. This I believe is the future of medicine. Type 1 diabetes by definition occurs when something, autoimmunity or a virus perhaps, destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Therefore I can see how maybe it may not be a genetic condition. But tendency towards autoimmunity is, to my understanding, influenced by genetics. Some people are just more genetically predisposed to autoimmune diseases in general and by way of several genes. So maybe type 1 diabetes is not specifically genetic in that there is a gene that is encoded for the beta cells to self destruct, but generally genetic and influenced by the many genes which influence an individual's tendency to have autoimmune related disorders. Just my thoughts.

As far as gluten is concerned, I am glad to know that I am genetically predisposed to be intolerant. Otherwise, if for some reason my symptoms abated, I would probably lull myself into thinking I could eat it with no consequences. I don't like being gluten free enough to just do it without having that hammer hanging over my head.

Betsbrooks, I did the 23andme DNA testing, then used third party providers to get the data translated into reports, genetic genie, live-wello, etc. and then did lots of reading and research...

There has been recent media that 23andme now have FDA approval to provide health reports, but last check of their website this week, they were not offering that package and I don't know what type of reports they will be offering.

With the third party report providers they tend to favour the data from 23andme,
I am kinda happy with just data from 23andme, as now I have the data file, I can use it with any website offering health report.

Thanks, Gabes. I think I haven't done enough reading and research yet!

This is where I am exactly at. I had a gluten free dominoes pizza a couple of weeks ago. And my Son got on me, he works at a different pizza place. He told me just because it is gluten free pizza crust,he said there is no way there is no cross contamination. He told me flour is everywhere in a pizza place. He told me it was all in my mind because I didn't get sick or have any symptoms, luckily. Sometimes I just want 1 weekend of a non restricted diet.
