advice on supplements

Post by armstrongpilot »

Hi all,

Im still on the entocort ec. doing ok....kinda.. Im still having really bad muscle pain, twitching and fatigue. I am looking to take vit d3 and maybe magnesium. I think maybe potassium would help? not sure? What kinds are safe...most brands here have soy in them. I would be much better off if I wasn't in pain all the time...never had this before

Towards the top of this main message page is a post magnesium summary of good info. This has discussions on type of magnesiums and where people buy it etc. there are loads of gluten free, soy free options...

I would suggest starting with Vit D3 and magnesium spray, these two are really well tolerated by most here... And help a multitude of health issues.

A good source of potassium is bananas, are you able to have small amount of banana?

Those symptoms can also be due to a vitamin B-12 and/or folate deficiency. Are you taking a vitamin B-12 and folate supplement? The most effective form is sublingual lozenges designed to dissolve under the tongue, where they go directly into the bloodstream. Sublingual lozenges contain the active form of these vitamins, and they are effective even if our body is incapable of converting the inactive form of vitamin B-12 (found in food and most cheap supplements) into the active form so that the body can use them.

Yep, aware of how to make it myself.
And you can absorb magnesium via Epsom salt foot baths etc.

I like buying the commercial product as I know how much elemental magnesium I am getting per ml...

Hi Armstrongpilot,

I went off Entocort last June and had tremendous muscle pains, and fatigue.

Just now, 4 months later, I'm starting to feel less pains.

I take a lot of vitamin D3 and magnesium. I think this has been the key for me to feel better.

Hi everyone,
I too use the D3 and magnesium spray along with the B12 and I feel it is helping me live the life I want to live, so different than before MC but definitely happy and doing the best with what I have learned here. I am extremely grateful for all the tips and experiences shared by others on their journey. There is no one person, who knows it all, but the collective here sure have helped to broaden
the scope of what we know about MC...... and fitting it to suit my life. so thankful, to be part of such a caring bunch of people.

HI,
I wouldn't worry so much about the multivitamin at this time....honestly it does have too much stuff in it and we react to many things that you can't control with a multivitamin.

Stick with VitD3 2-5000 mg, and external Magnesium Epsom salt soaks or Magnesium oil sprays (vitacost has a great mag oil spray for a great price too), and I have just purchased a 99 mg potassium tab from vitacost because I can't seem to shake a cramp in the arch of my foot for a couple weeks now, darn thing catches and hurts like the dickens too and I don't eat bananas haven't been a fan of them most my life. I do see that there is potassium and magnesium in avocados, potatoes, sweet potatoes, salmon...and a whole load of veggies and fruits that I can't have right now, but I'm definitely not getting enough so I think I need to lightly supplement the potassium at this time.

I had to heal for a while before I could add a sublingual B complex liquid, I am doing ok with that after almost 5 months of healing.

Take it easy and heal...stick to Vitd3 and Mag for a bit unless you are tolerating the B complex without having too much D with it.
Cheers

Hi Erica and all others:

I checked the iHerb site for "Potassium", and up came 4 different products:

Potassium Gluconate
Potassium Chloride
Potassium Iodide (?)
Potassium Citrate

Which one of these is the best, and why a combo product with potassium and iodide?

I totally agree with twirlitgirl. I can't imagine where I would be today without the help and support from this group. Whenever I'm on another board and someone is seeking answers I direct them here. I just can't say enough about the wonderful people on here!

Entocort depletes magnesium, and those are all symptoms of magnesium deficiency.

I have no idea which potassium supplement is best.

Armstrongpilot,

The B-12 tests (like so many blood tests that work for "normal" people) don't always reflect our needs. More than a few of us here find that even though our B-12 test levels are near the top of or above the "normal" range, the active form of B-12 (methylcobalamin) helps to relieve our symptoms. This is apparently due to relatively common methylation issues.

If you feel that you absolutely need to take a multivitamin, take a look at plain old Centrum Silver (not the special versions). As Erica pointed out, multivitamins contain a wide variety of junk, but most of them don't contain enough of any supplement to do much good if you happen to need those supplements. The amounts in them are so low that no one taking them has to worry about any overdoses, but on the other hand, they don't contain enough of anything to resolve any deficiencies, either.

But if I had your symptoms the main things I would be taking would be more vitamin D and magnesium.
