Hiya Katy!

I saw your post where you seem to have a case of the old "blahs". No wonder, after being so sick for so many months, having surgery, and being smack in the middle of a New England winter! So, even though you didn't ask for it, here's a pep talk!

OK, now it is time to do something for YOU! You do so much for everyone else - at work, at home......... now it's YOUR time! I am a great believer in exercise to fight the blahs. Any chance you might like to join a health club or buy yourself a treadmill and/or some weights? My girlfriend bought a second-hand treadmill for next to nothing and it works like a charm. Or, you could always get some exercise tapes or DVDs or that big exercise ball to use at home.

Re diet........I'll bet you will feel 100% better once you get back on track with your diet. At least, that was always the case in the past, if I remember correctly. Maybe you can carve some time out just so that you can plan, shop for, and cook up ahead some GF goodies. Staying GF requires all of that.....that's why it's so easy to get off track, IMHO.

How about taking a course or something like that - JUST FOR FUN? You impress me as someone with a very active, curious mind. The school system usually sponsors adult ed. courses that are interesting and fun, not to mention dirt cheap. An the array of courses is usually fascinating - eveything from flower arranging to Chinese to portrait drawing. I have found it a great way to be exposed to new ideas and people. And there are no tests or grades! Just fun!

I wish you and I could go to lunch at P.F. Changs, like we did in Portland year before last! Or to the Chinese tea room - wasn't that special? Anyway, hopefully we will be able to catch up this summer if we can get a little east coast gathering together. Carrie is working on it, and I know that Barb and Maggie are both interested. And Peg is coming to N.Y. too- YAY!

Hi Polly. Thanks. I need something! I'm so tired of being fat, and out of shape. I've got such a round belly now...I've had extra weight for years, but in October my belly swelled up and I went from a size 14 to size 18 with no weight gain. And now with the slight swelling from the surgery I can't even get into those jeans for more than a few minutes (although I haven't tried in a couple of weeks, but I don't suspect its gotten any better).

We did get lucky and have a 6 months free pass to the fitness room at the hotel where Geoff's brother was working. He got promoted and moved to be the general manager at another hotel so we lost our previous free perk of being able to use it. But, we didn't like to take advantage of the situation, but when Geoff went down to get an application, the general manager said she;d give us the first 6 months free. So now we have to try extra hard to get down there to work out. They have a nice indoor pool, small weight machine, rowing machine, treadmills and stationary bikes.

I got a little scared this morning. I tripped on something and fell straight forward. I felt it pull at my incision. Didn't hurt per se, but was sorer for a while. Guess I'm okay now though.

Well I'm rambling.

Hi Katy

It is horrible I know to feel that you weight and/shape is getting out of hand & you seem to be able to do nothing about it. My stomache swells up so much that I look nine months gone. Weight can vary up to 5 kilograms in a matter of days. Even during one day, at times. It is so frustrating. Hope you get to enjoy the gym at the hotel as much as possible. Excersise is so important & you feel so yuck when something prevents you from doing what you have been used to. I have put on so much weight in the last year or so simply because I have not been able to keep up my former routine. Am looking for new avenues to burn up energy & increase flexibility that does not put stress on areas effected by arthritis etc.

Hope you are feeling better about yourself soon.

Hi katy...I am feeling the same way...I just ate pretzels! I have no will power, and stress makes it worse for me. I have lost 8 pounds since Thanksgiving, but have a ton more to go....it's so hard! Hang in there...you'll lose it.... :smile: JJ

Looks like there are a few of us with the same problem, in spite of the bowel problems that we have. Makes you wonder if there is a connction somewhere.

Katy,

How long has it been now, since your surgery. I think it's very common to have the blahs after surgery for up to bout 6 months afterwards, but you are young and healthy, so things should start looking up soon.

Is it warm enough outdoors now in Vermont for you to be able to get out and walk? That always does wonders for my psyche. Got to get out and walk around up and down this street for the first time in years the other day, and it felt wonderful! Good way to tighten up those muscles, too. Just thought I'd throw this in, and you can't beat the price. Ha!

Saw a neat exercise machine on tv the other day. It was sort of like a treadmill, only it was an incline thing -- supposed to be not as much impact to the joints as a treadmill.
Anyone know what these are called, by chance. Do know that walking inclines is more exercise. I am definitely challenged on this street in terms of hills, but with one of these gizmos, I might could solve two problems -- not being able to get out, and easy on the knees.

After I was gutted for the BIG tumor, maybe the next week, was standing out under a tree in the back yard, and heard the sound of something falling onto a branch, so jumped out of the way, and sure enough, a big squirrel landed right where I had been standing. It's a wonder my incision didn't reopen, but those things seem to heal really fast. How do you think you're doing in that department, Katy? I just know you're going to feel much better without all that pain you had.

Hi Lucy,

I'll be 3 months out of surgery next week. And yes, my doc did warn me it takes 3-6 months to fully heal, and I've even read 6-12. We are actually having a warm January in Vermont which is almost worse than a cold one. We keep alternating between snow and rain, so I haven't been able to get out snowshoeing because the snow keeps melting.

There are certain aspects where I know I'm feeling better, but then this blah crap...And I just stopped by here because I was going to whine some more about it. Work is stressful right now, and I just got what I thought was a good report hacked by my boss. Best get back to those comments and get correcting it.

That would get to me too, particularly if I had thought the report was good. Hate surprises like that! Hopefully, things will pick up for you very soon, and the weather will be good for something outdoors, anyway.

Hi Katy,

I am sorry you are struggling so much with the weight and swelling on top of everything else - it's hard to remember that your weight is not you; you are so much more than that and you will get back to feeling better and being in more control of your weight again soon. Please, don't be too hard on yourself.
It does usually take some time to heal after major surgery - and the swelling will go down as you heal. I remember how ballooned out and puffed up I was after both of my C-sections; I felt at least 10 years older and unattractive.
Please, try to be patient with your body and don't blame yourself.
