Noises, wind and weird smells , BAM/BAD ?
I've been reading the on going discussion about BAM / BAD which is very interesting if a little bit over my head at times, however having read peoples accounts it has made me realise that I probably have this.
As I've become less alarmed of my symptoms I noticed a few patterns in my D. Firstly the key prerequisite is the gurgling intestines and quite a lot of wind, On the days I have D I sometimes notice a slightly bitter taste in my mouth which clears after D. The weirdest thing is that the D when it happens has a smell about it. Dr's ask if your stools smell more repugnant than usual when you have D, mine don't they just have this chemical smell to them, I know the smell, I've smelt it before somewhere but for the life of me I cant remember where . I can only describe it as a chemical smell. I've included my observation here as I was wondering if it is my own bile acids which have this strange chemical odour?

The chemical odor you describe...is it almost like a "burning" type smell? That's what my D smells like, but when the stools are more formed, it has more of a normal poop smell. I'd be interested in knowing what causes this myself!

Not burning more like a compound
Hi thanks for your response . No it isn't a burning smell, it smells more like a chemical compound, I would say ammonia but I don't think i'm right, certainly not the smell of methane and rotting food. All I can say is the first time I smelt it I recognised the smell instantly but just could not make the link as to where. Its possibly a smell from chemistry at school. I know its strange but you never forget smells. Sorry cant be more descriptive
I have actually had this type of smell when I have D. I always thought of it as a medicinal smell but chemical smell could also be used. I do not notice it when my BM's are more normal in nature. I am tapering off of Budesonide so I guess part of me always thought that maybe that is what caused this smell (or vitamins)?? Anyway, you aren't alone but not sure what meaning it has.....

Yes TaiaK I think that is an accurate description it is a sort of medical smell. As with you mine is only when I have D. Strange thing is I'm on no medication that would cause this so it must be what my body is creating without any help. This is what made me think is it the smell of excess Bowel acids coming out with Bowel acid diarrhea . I'm so pleased someone else has the same thing (sorry do not wish you any misfortune in saying that), was beginning to think I was unique in a not nice way. Thank you for making contact
I also forgot to mention that since this has all started I often get the feeling I haven't completely cleared my bowels. If I decide to sit it out for want of a better phrase , to try and empty, anything that comes out will be soft or D even when the first part was firm/normal.
I would ask if this is normal with MC but I get a feeling that normal is different for everyone's experience.
(I reminisce of the old days where going to the toilet required no thought, provoked no emotion and didn't involve me keeping a diary for the long awaited GI appointment)

Jim,
That's known as tenesmus. It's not exactly common with MC, but if you do a search of the archives, you will find that a number of members have posted about it. I can recall it happening to me sometimes back when I was reacting.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hello Jim, I to have the occasional smell of ammonia sometimes and also at times a very strong smell of sulphur. I believe I have finally figured out why and experimenting on myself to confirm my suspicions. I had a 23&Me test done and have confirmed I have a problem with methylation. My body isn't very efficient with removing certain chemicals and metals. I take activated B12 and B6 (P5P) and have found this helps immensely with the issue. If I don't take my supplements, sulphur and ammonia will accumulate in my body. Once I get back on them, I have a day or two where it seems like everything exiting my body has a very strong ammonia smell. Like it is dumping out of my body. There is a program called Genetic Genie that you dump your raw data from 23&Me into and it analyses all of the methylation related snips and produces a report. I didn't want to undertake my own treatment so found a naturopathic doctor to help treat me correctly. If you have a high ammonia smell, try cutting back on red meat. That may help.

Hi Linda thank you for your reply, that seems like an interesting idea and I will look into the 23&me test . As you say it is from time to time , not sure if it's a sulphur or ammonia smell or something else with me. It's certainly a medical type smell , something I've possibly smelt in a hospital before.
It's funny what the body can ferment when it's not operating as it should. You read in many places that unpleasant smells can be an indication of something wrong, I can't find much consensus on these chemical type smells unless I'm looking in wrong places
