paging Polly or Tex

Post by Alicegf »

Hi!

I hope you are both doing well! I just posted a question to the wrong forum and so am repeating it here. I would like to know if 6 years is the recommended interval for repeat colonoscopy for MCers with no history of polyps. I'm scheduled for a scope tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. and now am wondering if it's really necessary. I know I should have researched this sooner! But I've been traveling and just didn't give it much thought until now. Thanks!

Hi Alice,

Sorry, I just got back to the computer, but I responded to one of your other posts, so I assume that you have seen it by now.

Good luck with the procedure,
Tex

Hi Alice!

Just saw this, so I guess you've already had the procedure. My followup has always been 5 years, with or without polyps. (I had them initially but have not since taking vitamin D). Hope it went smoothly!

Love,

Polly

Hi again Polly,

Thanks so much for your reply. I did go ahead with the scope, and there was 1 small polyp - my first. I was hoping that I'd never have one, of course!
So now this doc says I have to do the scope every 3 years, because my grandfather had colon cancer and my sister had polyps. I took a different prep this time: Suprep, and I have to say it was awful. Have you ever taken that one? I had cramping, in addition to nausea and uncomfortable bloating. I'm thinking
that my appendectomy last year put strain on something, because the most intense pain was right where my appendix used to be!
Thanks again, and way to go with your every- 5- years plan!

I thought my GI told me every 8-10 years after my first colonoscopy. Is that because I was in my 30's then? That was in 2009. No plans to find a new GI or get a scope anytime soon....

Zizzle,

Perhaps you have some risk factors? I think 10 years is the protocol for someone with no risk factors.

My husband has no health issues. Had his first in his 50s- everything was good. Dismissed for another ten years.

I have had precancerous polyps each time I've had a colonoscopy (had three so far) and am on the three year plan. Don't like it but colon cancer would be worse.

My son son was recently dx with UC and the prep protocol has changed. He Started with dulcolax tablets and then a miralax and gatoraide drink but not the big jug sized as in the past. Then, he finished a second dose the morning of the procedure. He said it went ok, although, he never complains. I'm hoping that goes better for me because I had issues with horrible vomiting- too much liquid in too little time. It was not pleasant. The only thing that would worry me with taking in more miralax so close to the procedure time is the possibility of having an accident during the drive to the office or in the waiting room.

Hope everything went well for you.

The prep my mother took always made her sick so we mentioned that to her GI before the last colonoscopy. He gave her pills to take. No nausea during the prep. One polyp, not precancerous, due to her age that was her last one.

I am on the 10 year plan currently because I had one polyp not precancerous found on the last one. Both my grandfathers died from cancer. By the time they were diagnosed, it had spread so they did not know where it originated.

Zizzle,

I meant perhaps you DON'T have any risk factors.

Update:
I think this is cool. This morning an email was waiting for me from the GI, with the full results of my scope attached. Never had that happen before! The tiny mucosa (polyp) he removed was benign. Also negative for MC, which I expected. So now it says that I can wait 5 years til the next scope!
Yay!

Thanks for all your input and stories.

Yup, I understood, and yes, I have no risk factors other than the MC. Although Dermatomyositis comes with a strong risk of cancer, so I might need to move up that re-screen.

Really? About the derma....? Because I had dermatographia last year for the first time. I think this falls into the same category as the one you mentioned, though not sure.

Alice,
I've had dermographia (skin writing) most of my life. Dermatomyositis is different, but possibly related. I developed it after my first pregnancy. Too many active mast cells are probably the cause of dermographia.
