Polly, thats great news. It gives me hope that I'll be ok with how I'm eating.

Could that be the reason why I'm so horribly fatigued everyday? I'm pretty much eating meat & veggies with limited fruits? I do eat rice & corn but have tried to reduce the frequency. I've seen an acupuncturist twice now and she said she'd like me to get protein from other sources than meat. Eggs and yogurt were brought up but those aren't on my list of safe foods. I thought about testing eggs to see if they cause a stomach ache but I'd hate to ruin a whole day or two by guessing wrong. I briefly read about ketosis and decided to bury my head in the sand since I at least don't have the never ending stomach ache and nausea anymore since I've eliminated most everything I used to eat.

Wonderful report, Polly! I'm sure that your daily workouts have a lot to do with your numbers. Thanks for an inspiring post.

I know this post is old, but it made me burst into tears (of relief and hope) as I read it. At an appointment at my Naturopath last Tuesday, where I thought I was going in to discuss my treatment protocol for stubborn SIBO I have been battling, she pointed out my high HDL value on recent blood work. It is 103. She told me this is abnormally high and recent research points to it being a cancer marker. I was absolutely stunned since I have always looked at my cholesterol numbers as being a bright spot of my health. I asked her what else would cause HDL to go that high and she said she wasn't aware of anything to make it go that high. I've spent the last 4 days scared to death (having a house full of company for the holiday has been rough to act normal) and googling here and there as I had time as to what could cause a high HDL. It is all very confusing, most praise the high number, yet there a few articles here and there that seem concerning, though not necessarily for cancer, more for heart disease.

My full cholesterol numbers are as follows:
HDL 103
LDL 55
TRI: 48
Total cholesterol:168

I looked for old cholesterol tests and came up with 4. It seems I have always been on the high side for HDL, with total cholesterol ranging between 139 and 178. My first test was in 2009 (age 37) and HDL was 77, 2012 it was 93, 2014 it was 95 and now 103. My diet changed in early 2012 to higher protein, much lower carb. I have been gluten free since 2012, except a period of 2 months just prior to my MC diagnosis in March of 2013. I also have been dairy free for the bulk of the last 3 years as well. Like everyone here while I was trying to figure out the MC part I was very restrictive with my diet, going through periods of eating just meat, meat and a few veggies, meat and potatoes, etc (you get the idea). I don't think I have eaten enough fats since go lower carb, since I don't seem to digest them well and also I prefer leaner meats. Even now my diet is very limited to what people see as normal. I eat a lot of turkey, chicken, once in a while salmon, vegetables, and olive oil and eggs. I don't eat red meat and haven't for over 20 years (didn't like it in the dining hall at college and just never started eating it again). I feel better if I eat some carbs so I often will have GF bread once a day. Carbs seem to help with the BAM issue I had recently uncovered thanks to Polly's post on Cholestyramine.

Anyway, since Polly reported her numbers and I have some other similarities with her (not completely getting better despite strict diet, BAM) I thought it was interesting. Also, I was happy to see that others commented that they also have had high HDL and they didn't see it as a problem. I am sure I'll be looking more into this but if anyone has anything to add on causes of high HDL I would appreciate comments.

Thank you-
Robin
