Travel ideas
Ok I previously stated that I had cancelled my trip with the family due to spending so much time in the car and limited resources like a washing machine. I have been thinking about how I could manage on the road and try to go. Do any of you have experience with traveling with chronic diarrhea? I need help if I'm going to do this!!! [/b]

Thanks Gabes! Lot of good ideas there about food and letting people know I need the restroom. I think my main concern is while I'm riding down the road and need to "go" quickly. Now I can just go jump in the shower. I won't have that luxury on the road. I thought maybe someone could give me ideas on what they have done to get by until the destination.
Mellie, Are you able to take Pepto Bismol tablets? I took 6/day when I was first diagnosed and I didn't suffer any side effects from taking it.

Mellie, have you ever tried going without the benefiber and the probiotic? I took 3 days of probiotic due to use of antibiotic I was sick for 2 weeks from it. It was nonstop D.

Martha, Disney is awesome for food allergies/sensitivities! I was there last December and I was able to eat foods that I hadn't tried since my diagnosis. My husband said he was going to cry after we ate at a buffet at the Biergarten. The chef came out and walked me through the buffet line. I want to go back again just to eat! Have a wonderful time!

Mellie, I would try the Pepto then, at least for the timing of your trip. It actually got me to the point that I had to cut back because I was having C. I had been going up to 8x a day. I hope things work out for you.

Your gastro obviously doesn't have the foggiest idea how to properly treat MC. As Martha pointed out, most of us cannot tolerate probiotics or normal amounts of fiber (let alone large amounts), while we are recovering. They will prevent us from recovering.Mellie wrote:My gastro instructed me to take benefiber and a probiotic along with Bentyl.
As Martha and Marcia have suggested, if I were in your situation I would drop the benefiber and probiotic, and start using Pepto-Bismol if I wanted to travel without constantly having "accidents".
Fiber is not our friend, and neither are probiotics, when our MC is active. After we are in remission, we can usually tolerate them, but after we are in remission, why would we need them?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Millie - An important lesson for me has been that there are times when listening to your doctor is a very bad idea. This is one of them. As Tex says your doctor does not know anything about MC and has given you bad advice. You'll be much better off listening to the advice you get on the forum. Count me as one more person saying drop the fiber and the probiotic. They are most likely making things worse.

Thank you Marcia! That really makes me feel better, I was really worried about it. I don't want to stop my life due to this disease, especially because my children will be grown before I know it.

if you are still having intermittent leakage/accidents and want to travel, my suggestions are
plan the trip, plan for stops every 2 hours.
each stop take the time to relax and empty your bowels - relaxation techniques etc
Carry baby wipes/bum wipes,
use coconut oil on your skin to protect the skin from any leakage events inbetween toilet stops.
If needbe, use disabled toilets so that you have washbasin in with the toilet
I have never stopped carrying 'emergency kit' in my car, i have spare undies, pants, wash cloths, hand towel, bags for rubbish etc.
and should i need to clean up a major MC mud accident, I just throw the dirty wash cloths/hand towels etc away
Most of all, dont get overwhelmed or stressed.
my day to day 'toilet bag' that I carry in my hand bag, has wipes, nappy disposal bags, disinfectant wipes to clean the toilet if needbe, toilet paper (as many public toilets the toilet paper is not MC useful)
When i was moving interstate (3 day trip), I had a bag in the car with bulk supplies of these, and each day I would restock the smaller bag that i take into the toilet with me
I also have quite a few friends, and me now, that live rural where it is a septic system where you cant use too much paper. So tend to use my own supplies, put them into the nappy disposal bag and dispose away from their house.
