Help, Anyone know lots about Maui??
Waaaaaaaah, my daughter and dear little Kylee are moving to Maui. I think I shall die! My daughter and I are very close and have bonded like super glue to my grandbaby. They don't have a definite date but Josh has been there for several days now. Anyway, I am just wanting to know more about the place. I know its great for a vacation but what about living there?
Thanks a bunch.

Wow Lori,
That's a tough one to handle, I'm sure. Will you be able to visit sometimes & them come back here for visits?
I know nothing about Maui so I can't really help you there. What an experience for them.

My girlfriend lived on Oahu and now lives on the Big Island. I don't know much about Maui. Oahu is more touristy. I was there for two weeks and felt claustrophobic. We went around the whole Island in two days. I think
Maui is even smaller. Groceries and gas are outrageous. Once my girlfriend called me on her cell from the gas station and the attendant said it will be 45 dollors please. I gasped. This was way before the gas hike.
But, then again you don't have far to drive. HEHEHE.
Not like us Texans who like drive and drive and drive. It will be a wonderful place to visit. I'm hoping to save enough money this year to take Emily to visit her middle name sake," Catherine " this spring break or summer on the Big Island.

Lori,
My husband lived on the big island for 8 years before moving to Alaska in 1985 which is where we live now. He loved it there. After reading your post I asked him about Maui and he only mentioned that it's now like Southern California. ?? I dunno what that means.
The good news is, even though they are moving far away you will have an adventure each time you travel to see them. I'm sure you are sad to see them leave you though- that's a tough one.
The Islands are beautiful. Are they transfering jobs with a company, or just moving to make a new start?
Love,
Joanna

Its a loooong story and a new start. I am not comfortable with it. They have had some problems. I worry about her being so far away and if she would need our help...we couldn't get there right away.
I was wondering if it is a safe place. I have heard the Islander's don't like the mainlanders. I know you can have a problem of feeling land locked. I think she might experience that...she likes to get out and go places.
I don't know...I didn't think we would not be a part of Kylee's life. I want them to stay. I think a child needs a whole group of people around that love them. Kylee loves us. In fact, we had her overnight on Friday. Mom came to pick her up and she wouldn't even go to her when it was time to leave. She wanted to stay with Grandma.
If it's like southern California then I would say "it's a nice place to visit but you wouldn't want to live there.
Gosh, I hope she changes her mind!
Thanks all,
Hugs

Not only will you miss them, but they will miss you too. My husband got transfered to Houston when Emily was 9 months old. My kids have not really had a close releationship with there realitives. Mostly on the part of my family. So, we have created a new family here with friends.
But, it doesn't have to be that way. I love the unlimited long-distance. That is a great feature if you have loved one far away. Maybe you can go and visit for a month at a time.
My girlfriend who lives on the big Island has a 6 year old and her mother spends about 3 months out of the year there.
It will work out great, and what a great adventure for your daughter.
I know how you feel. I can't imagine having Emily leave. There's just something special between a mom and her daughter.

Lori-
I've been there a few times - once after college graduation with my best friend and also for my honeymoon. I think it is a beautiful place - very calming and peaceful - I always think it would be hard to be stressed if one lived there - but that is speaking as a person on vacation...living there you are missing maid service, have to go to work and all of the everyday grind stuff that is life....I think if they *live* there you don't need to worry about being treated differently...I have a friend who has lived on Kauai since 1990 and my old roommate grew up on Oahu. As a local instead of a tourist, I understand there is a pretty good sense of community among those who live there full-time. Oh my SIL also grew up there (Oahu) and when she has withdrawls, she and my brother go for a visit. My friend on Kauai (much smaller than Maui...) owns a business with her cousins....she says she does go into Honolulu etc. for certain things - like to see the GYN since she is good friends with everyone on Kauai and would feel awkward
I hope everything works out - I know you will miss them so much!

Lori,
I have no personal experience with the Islands, although I'm headed for Honolulu in August with one of the bands I play with. But I've known or met various people over the years who have lived there, and they either loved it, or hated it for a whole host of reasons.
As for Islanders not likeing mainlanders, I think Ashley has a good personality for fitting in (from the little I know of her and her mom). My experience with those regional issues is that if you don't try to enforce your regional lifestyle on them, and live similarly to the manner they are accustomed, they don't care so much. This comes not only from my experiences living in Vermont where we HATE Flatlanders. But there is such a thing as an out-of-stater, which isn't as bad, and the summer I spent in North Carolina...and let me tell you, they aren't fond of Yanks! In fact I was informed that the town of Cary, NC stands for "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees". (Useless trivia for the day, and if anyone wants to hear about Fred Tuttle, the farmer who ran for US senate to keep a MA native from winning a Vermont seat, I'd be happy to oblige).
Josh has family there, doesn't he? I know you'll miss her horribly, but communication means are SO much better now than when we were younger (I figure if we'd had cell phones when I graduated from HS Geoff and I'd have ended up getting married about 10 years ago, instead of him marrying his ex-wife).
