It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Happy New Year everyone! I thought of our internet family today as I was preparing our traditional New Year's Day meal. In my area of PA it is a tradition to have pork & sauerkraut to bring luck in the New Year. While I can tolerate pork there was no way I was going to try sauerkraut. I'm hoping that as my husband and son enjoyed the pork & sauerkraut I'm covered as well.

That's interesting. My family has always considered cornbread and black-eyed peas on New Years Day to be good luck. Apparently back in the days when these traditions were started, folks in PA lived higher off the hog than folks down here in the South.
And dang if I didn't eat a few black-eyes today without even realizing that they're a legume.
So far no repercussions though, so maybe I'll be lucky and get away with it unscathed.

Hi, Tex. How ironic would it be to have an adverse reaction to something that you ate for luck?! I hope all went well for you. It is interesting to learn of what others around the country eat on New Year's Day. My Dad is from VA but he always ate pork & sauerkraut. I guess he was outnumbered. He would eat the black eyes on occasion but I can't remember anyone else in my family eating them.

That would indeed be ironic. But I apparently got away with it. I'm glad I ate just a few.
Now that I think about it, my dad also used to eat pickled pig's feet and sauerkraut on New Year's Day, but the rest of us didn't, (at least not on New Year's Day). My grandfather (my dad's father) was a German immigrant, so I suppose that's where the pig's feet and sauerkraut tradition originated with him. But he also ate black-eyes, so as not to take any chances.
My mom always insisted that we had to eat at least a few black-eyes, even if we didn't like them.
