My cholesterol level has increased to the point that my cardio wants me to start taking red yeast rice. In the past, I've had bad side effects from taking a small dose of Zocor, so quit.
Does anyone have experience with taking red yeast rice. . .does it work and are the side effects tolerable. In checking, Thorne Choleast seems to be a good brand but is pricey.
A few years back, I took Niaspan, and it worked to keep my cholesterol in check, but for some reason, Niaspan is no longer a "good" drug to take, so red yeast rice is the next plan.
Would appreciate your input.

Hi Garina,
I've taken red yeast rice for at least 5 years - not sure of the exact number. I've had no side effects or problems of any kind with it. My cholesterol numbers are all very good.
It is expensive, so I usually buy it online at Vitacom. I don't recall the price, but it's the lowest I can find. My husband takes it also and has for many years. He tried one of the brand name statins, but couldn't tolerate the side effects. I should mention that I seem to have a naturally high HDL number - it's never been too low. My triglycerides tend to be good also. So my problems are just slight, mostly LDL.
I hope this helps!

Hi Alice,
I also order supplements from Vitacost, as I find their prices are better than most. The red yeast rice is so terribly expensive, but I'm going to try it. I'm so glad it is working for you and your husband and I hope it works for me as well. The bottle states one serving is one pill which is 600 mg, but I've read where some people take two. I will start out slow.
The PA at the office told me I should limit animal fats, cheese, dairy, but not to worry too much about eggs. Well, at least, eggs are still in! Bacon is out.
Your input is a big help to me. Thanks so much.
