Getting glutened......

Post by Greengoddess »

If there was ever proof needed about the effects of gluten on MC ask anyone who eats it by mistake! One Xmas morning with no glasses on my guy mixed up the toast and I ate a whole TWO slices before I realized it was not "my" gf bread. I wasn't prepared for the consequences which were/are horrible. It was like every symptom came back all at once. My bladder being way the worst. The only solution was to take prednisone for a few days. But still reverberations. I believe there is somehow called gluten ease that can work in those times? The second toaster is now in another room! I'm hoping that some permanent damage has not been done. Also increased vit d.

I'm sorry to hear that such a mix-up occurred. I believe I would make my own toast in that situation, because if he handles his bread first, and then touches your bread, that can be enough to cause enough cross-contamination that some of us would react to it.

And even if we don't react immediately, that can cause a chronic low-level inflammation issue that can make our immune system much more sensitive, because it is being stimulated every day by that small amount of cross-contamination. The result would be that our threshold for triggering a reaction would be lowered (IOW, it can take less gluten to make us react), and the reactions might be more severe when they occur.

Hi, Green. So sorry that you were glutened. I take Gluten Ease before I eat a meal out as a preventive. I did take it the last time that I was glutened. I think it helped a bit but I think it works better if you take it prior to getting glutened. I was glutened twice recently so I feel your pain. I hope you're feeling better soon.

This has happened to me and its awful, I know your distress and pain.

Hope you are better soon. Accidents happen, my partner has gluten products and sometimes I have unadvertantly eaten something or been given something in a restaurant.

I have never heard of Gluten Ease either, going to investigate.
I wonder how does it works, ..........thinking out loud!

Jen,

It's an enzyme designed to break down the gluten peptides that the human digestive system was not designed to digest. It doesn't do a perfect job, but it usually helps. Many of those products only work primarily on the 33-mer peptide. Unfortunately there are approximately 300 other gluten-associated peptides that have been shown to cause celiacs to react, but the 33-mer peptide is the alpha gliadin peptide that causes most of the damage, so breaking it down helps a lot.

Jen,

Someone in our group mentioned it, that's how I found out about it. The label reads that it is a complete gluten and casein formula. I have issues with casein as well so I take it prior to eating out and cross my fingers and hope for the best! I just had a great experience at Devon Seafood in Hershey, PA. My server was very attentive and he came to the table to let me know that they put diced tomatoes on my steamed asparagus and he asked for another serving. I could have kissed him!
