Well Shoot — Paint Me Stupid (Again)

Post by tex »

Hi All,

For a long time I couldn't tolerate even nut butters, let alone the nuts themselves. I'm talking about all nuts. But earlier last year I discovered that I could handle almond and then cashew butter just fine. I've been doing so well with them that I decided maybe I should try whole almonds. So I tried a few, and after a couple of hours or so I was still feeling fine. So I thought, "Heck, that worked so well I might as well try some more". And that's where things started headin' south.

By bedtime I had a belly ache, but it wasn't totally intolerable, so I made a note to self, "Self, don't eat so many next time". Somewhere around 2 or 3 am I suddenly found myself awake with intense gut pain due to cramps. The pain slowly intensified until it threatened to peg the needle on the pain meter. While lying there with nothing other than pain to occupy my thoughts, I made another note to self, "You idiot, don't ever eat another one of those damn things again. Ever!"

I would have got up and got dressed to drive to the ER except that I was hurting too much to get dressed. So I decided to wait until the cramps subsided a bit. But you know how it goes . . . after the cramps backed off to an almost tolerable level, I figured that the reaction was over, so it would be foolish to go to the ER. Of course it didn't take my belligerent gut long to illustrate the problems with my logic. Before it registered on my foggy brain that the cramps seemed to be getting worse again, the pain was already pegging the needle. :sigh: But somewhere around 9 o'clock the pain seemed to be backing off again, so by 10 I got up the nerve to get up and get dressed.

My gut was still bloated and sore, and my back was so stiff and sore that I couldn't bend over to tie my boot laces initially, but after a few minutes I was able to take care of that little chore. I skipped breakfast, but by noon I felt almost human again, so I ate some pork sausage and a baked potato. That fixed me right up, so now I'm ready to take on the world again.

During the 7 or 8 hours when I couldn't do much but grimace in pain, I kept thinking that maybe I was passing another kidney stone. But it didn't feel quite the same, and when I checked my temperature after I got up, it was slightly low, so apparently it was just a problem with the almonds — probably too much fiber.

As you may recall, I had a similar reaction to peanuts back in September. The peanuts completely stopped my guts from working. But after that I ordered an EnteroLab test that showed that I am now sensitive to soy. I didn't have a stethoscope available to check my gut motility this time, but when the cramps were running amuck I could occasionally hear some rather loud gurgling sounds, so I have reason to believe that they weren't in neutral or paralyzed. And of course I had a round of D this morning.

At any rate, I ain't never gonna touch another whole nut, no matter how enticing they may seem. If I ever post that I'm considering doing that at any point in the future, just shoot me.

That's awful and odd! Glad you are feeling better now after experiencing that after eating nuts. Hopefully it was the high fiber that caused the severe issue.

Pumpkins seeds cause a horrid, scary reaction in me. And the last few years has seen a big interest in different products that have pumpkin in it. I've had a slight interest at times to try one of these pumpkin products. Some of them look delicious, but I haven't gotten my courage up enough to see, and in all likelihood never will.

isnt it interesting that you think it is ok and then there is a major tipping point that causes chronic reaction...

hope you are feeling better....

Thanks. I'm feeling fairly well here in mid-afternoon, with only a little left-over bloating and watery D. I'll probably be as good as new by tomorrow (well, as good as I'm likely to ever get these days, anyway ).

It's a bummer when that happens, you get to re-experience what life was like on a daily basis and know you don't want to go back!

Glad you are feeling better, and didn't need an ER visit.

Dang Tex,

I'm right along with you in regards to thinking I could 'tolerate' just a little - but with me it was probably a combo of my virus that isn't quite over and an Egg that just sounded so good I ate it with my hashbrowns. Plus I'm trying to introduce a couple supps to help with Methylation stuff that are identified in my genes and quite possibly one of my issues in how my body has been breaking things down and eliminating them.

Glad your reaction didn't send you to the ER....mine just gave me a fit of WD at 3:30 a.m. and a few more subsequent trips to the bathroom after that too. Needless to say I'm back on my pretty bland diet and external magnesium for a few days, just til the dust settles.

How about you, how long does it take for your body to readjust to oops's ?

Hugs

Tex, I think it's hard for any of us to chew nuts enough to get them the consistency of nut butter and those chunks can either "go right through" or hurt like hell on the journey. Thanks God for all the cool nut butters out there right now.
Also, a lot of store-bought whole nuts are processed in the same facilities as peanuts, I'm thinking.

I'm glad that you pretty much dodged the bullet, for the most part. Onward and upward!

Donna,

You're so right. We forget how bad it once was and after 10 years of steady remission, with only a few mediocre reactions along the way, when I have a more serious reaction these days I think, "Wow! This is bad stuff". I don't see how I survived when it was a regular daily routine. I must have been tougher back then.

Normally I wouldn't consider running to the ER with just any little health issue, but when you have an ileostomy, the level of pain and cramps that I was feeling floods your brain with thoughts of a blockage (when there is no output for hours). A blocked ileostomy can get very serious in a hurry.

Erica wrote:How about you, how long does it take for your body to readjust to oops's ?
l'm already almost there. The D is slowing down. I'll probably have a hangover effect in the morning, but by tomorrow sometime I should be over it.

Chris,

True, but I have no problem eating such foods as Fritos, and tortilla chips, and they're bound to be loaded with chunks that have relatively sharp edges and points, even when they're carefully chewed. And I chewed the almonds extra carefully.

And you're right that most nuts are processed in facilities that handle peanuts and other risky stuff, but I made sure that the almonds safely covered all the bases on the label (and I paid a pretty penny to make sure that they were "safe". I still wonder about those thin brown husks on the almonds. At any rate, something definitely didn't sit well with my digestive system, because if it were a pinball machine it would have been screaming "Tilt" most of the night.

Tex,

That's truly a bummer......sorry to hear that............I was wondering if I'd ever be able to eat whole nuts again, and will wait awhile longer before I try based on your reaction! A handful of nuts was my go to snack before all of this happened. I am thankful I can eat the almond and cashew butter.........one day soon I will get brave and try the peanut butter..........it's funny how frightening those new food experiences are (I guess when being so sick last summer is still fresh in my mind and I feel so good now that I'm not willing to take too many risks)!

Glad you are on the mend!

Ditto, Tex! No more nuts for me after an attack of diverticulitis. Horrible pain, fever, blood and unable to eat anything for a few days. AND I have to have a colonoscopy.

I'm glad you recovered quickly, Tex.

Tex, I so hate that! Do you drink almond milk or have you lately? I thought you told me that at one point. Just wondering if that would bother you. I can't drink it, too hard on my gut right now....

So glad you are better!

Jari,

Your experience might be totally different. I may just have a unique problem with nuts.

Sheila,

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. My experience was sorta minor, compared with what you went through. And that's a bummer that you'll need another colonoscopy, too. IMO the combination of MC and diverticulitis makes both worse than they would be otherwise, because they involve the same type of T cell inflammation.

Martha,

Yes, I use almond milk almost every day, and it has never caused any problems, which just adds to the mystery.

Terre,

All is well this morning. I didn't even wake up with that old hit-by-a-truck feeling that often goes with MC reactions.

It doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your support.

HI Tex,
I just read this too, so sorry to hear about all that you have just been through, so glad that you didn't have to go to emergency.
It really can happen anytime even after years of remission. Thank you for letting us know you are feeling alot better today, keep going upward and onward
over the hurtle on your journey back to wellness where you were, a quote I like not sure where it came from " 10% is what happens to you and 90% is what you do about it, IMO
I think it speaks volumes to us on our MC journey, sure we have this disease but it doesn't have to have us, we control the 90% living with it and our food and lifestyle choices... after saying that I am still very thankful that this disease has taught me how to take better care of myself and relax more , let the small stuff go
My wise Aunt says something I live by everyday, leave good news alone and don't go looking to find out why it is good news... it just is.... keep moving forward everyone ,

Hi, Tex. So glad that you're feeling better! I make cinnamon roasted almonds at Christmastime and I almost gave in and tried some, but I didn't. I think I'll just stay with enjoying the smell as they roast.
