Eating Out

Post by terre »

I may not get a reply before it is time to leave my house. I have three girlfriends that have invited me to lunch to celebrate on of them finishing her radiation and feeling better.

I have been avoiding eating out, but feel the need to go. They chose a mexican restaurant that serves GF....just for me. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should eat? Can I stick to their GF options and hold all cheese products (that I know about)?

Thanks,
Terre

I'm not sure about whether you have other sensitivities, but for Mexican I would try to stick to white rice, chicken, and maybe some guacamole.

It also depends on the place. There are some trendy Mexican restaurants around here that make their own shells out of gluten free flour, all sauces from scratch etc. If that is the case you might be ok to have tacos, not spicy, without dairy.

I would avoid anything with lots of peppers or beans.

Mexican food is mostly GF anyway (as long as you go with corn tortillas and avoid flour tortillas). If you're sensitive to casein (which most of us are), you may need to discuss that with your waiter or waitress, because otherwise some dishes will be topped with melted cheese. I was always able to tolerate the red and green chili sauces, even while I was recovering, but many of us have to avoid them, especially while recovering.

I would consider tamales to be one of the safer choices, as long as they don't add wheat flour to their masa. Enchiladas usually contain onions, and they're topped with cheese, and most of us have to avoid those while recovering. And as Chemgirl mentioned, if you're sensitive to soy, avoid the refried beans.

Thanks for the suggestions.

It's not a trendy place, but I do think they are careful when cooking GF. I don't like beans, so safe there....I do like guacomole and their chips are corn. I'll try to be very selective, take an Imodium and hope for the best!

I think it's the fiber in the beans for me. I rarely get pain after eating anymore, but beans will leave me bloated and feeling awful for the rest of the day.

Hi Terre,
I agree with chemgirl and Tex, do the best you can with what sensitivies you know about and above all else relax and enjoy their company because at the end of the day if you are relaxed while eating you will digest your food so much better and will help build your confidence for eating out more often as your gut heals and more foods are reintroduced. Beans really bloat me too, so I stick with rice and chicken as my go to meals when out in any restaurant, ask for some avocado slices too they are very filling and so good for you if you can tolerate them, good healthy fats... good luck and hope you have a wonderful meal with your friends and hope it digests well. one step at a time on this journey.

Thanks for ALL of the wonderful suggestions!

As it turned out, I did not get to eat with those girlfriends.....ended up going to the ER to be with friend's mom (who is like a second mother to me). I will keep all of your suggestions in mind the next time I need to eat away from home. Nice to know that Mexican can be worked around (even though I plan to eat at home as much as possible)....thanks again.
