Iodine Deficiency and Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Post by Lilja »

Hi all.

I came across a discussion forum regarding supplements in general, where these articles regarding iodine were included:

http://www.sott.net/article/307684-Iodi ... -your-life

http://lugolsiodinesolution.com/drbrownsteiniodine.htm

http://www.laurapower.com/page26.html

To find some scientific backup, I found this:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/235826

Have any of you used iodine supplements, not only for treating thyroid problems, but also for MC?

I've been taking kelp tablets, high in iodine, for years. The dose I take is higher than what the average American gets. It's lower than what is seen in Japan and Asia. I haven't seen a difference with my MC from the iodine that I take.

I have been having iodine urine tests (i pay for them) I am struggling to get my levels up, even with regular supplementation, which we have just increased.

I was listening to a podcast the other day about iodine deficiency, a wholistic dentist who was contributing said his preference would be that the water supply have iodine rather than fluoride.
they also discussed that in current medical system not enough focus/importance is placed on iodine levels.

of note
- some factors that increase demand of iodine;
diarrhoea, excessive carb intake, pregnancy,

- functions facilitated by iodine
cell division, endocrine modulator, mast cell immunoglobulin homeostatisis, myelineation and synaptogenesis, physical and mental development, synthesis of thyroid hormones

a gabe pondering in reading this - i wonder if MC'er Mast Cell issues, and foggy brain issues are linked to iodine deficiency ??

Gabes,

I did this experiment mentioned on Dr Brownstein's site, painting a suare in the size of a stamp on my arm with iodine 2% (meant to treat wounds). It disappeared after 9 hours. Even if the experiment is not very scientific, it should give an idea:

"Another way of testing for iodine sufficiency is by painting an area of skin with tincture of iodine. It should take between 18 to 24 hours or more for the body to absorb the red or orange iodine stain if the person is iodine sufficient. If the iodine patch absorbs more quickly, the likelihood is the person being tested is not iodine sufficient. This method is probably not as accurate or quantitative as the iodine-loading test with the subsequent collection of the 24-hour urine".

So, I took capsules of this Kelp product for a couple of days, which gave me the horrible night sweats I finally had gotten rid of...

be cautious with using kelp - it can a big risk for heavy metals etc

my urine test is not the 24hr collection, it is just one urine sample. (there is no iodine loading beforehand)
I have read about the skin test and plan on using that as a way to monitor progress...

I use iodine drops - it is an aussie company practitioner only range that i get via compounding pharmacy or chiro practitioner

Lilia,

I asked my dr to test my iodine level this past fall. I was surprised to find out it was very low.
The reason I asked her to test was that I have 'strawberry moles' on my body, and read that they could be a sign of low iodine.

I have been taking dulse.... Sea vegetables....and will be anxious to see, at my next appt. if I've brought up the level.

I tried to order Lugol's Iodine via Brownstein's site, but got this information:

http://www.bloodrootproducts.com/Lugols ... _s/143.htm

As soon as a product is withdrawn from the market, I get suspicious. Maybe the medical society don't want people to get healthy?

And just when I entered my order at iHerb on your suggested product, I got a message from a friend that Lugol's Iodine can be bought over the counter at my local pharmacy...
