Back Pain or Bladder/Kidney Problems
Awful back pains and black dots:
My D stopped in March 2015. But, for the last week I have had grusom pains in my lower back. I don’t think this is due to my lower back surgery back in November this year (spinal stenosis, inflamed sciatic nerves «and very disorganizeds conditions», according to my surgeon). I have been painfree since surgery November 3, uptil now. These pains are constant, if I lay down, walk, stand up, or sit down, - the pains are awful and they sit on both sides of the lower back spine.
I have come to think about the urine tract and possibly kidney stones. I had one kidney stone that got stuck in the urine tract back in 2005, but I never followed up to find out whether the stone flushed out or got stuck. It was painfull, but went away. Now, I have had pains for 5 days.
I usually check my underwear (old habit) before putting them into the washing machine.
For the last couple of months there have been spots, tiny small spots, stains that are not yellow nor red, just black spots in the front of my underwear. And also, if I haven’t cleaned my toilet properly for 1 week, there is a red band in the bottom of my toilet, just above the waterline.
I have had so called «microscopic blood» in my urine for the last 25years, but no one has been able to find out what it is, and I have had a lot of examinations. «You must have a very thin bladder wall, and tiny blood leaking from the bladder is not alarming» has been the message.
Should I just endure the pains and hope they go away? Or should I try to find out what is causing these pains? Is microscopic blood in urine normal and nothing to get worried about?

I am not expert - my first pondering was based on your reaction to starting the methionine, I am wondering if it is clearing the imbalance in your bladder?
my suggestion would be stop the L-methionine, and see if the pains go away?

Lilia,
If you have been having persistent lower back pains for over a week, it might be a good idea to have your doctor check it out. It's not impossible that sciatic pain night have returned. Or you might have a kidney infection, or stones, but kidney pain is usually slightly above the lower back.
Hematuria (even idiopathic hematuria) is somewhat common, but it can be caused by medications, and possibly by supplements. Did the current hematuria symptoms begin soon after you began taking anything different (such as the methionine)?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Yes, the current hematuria symptoms began immediately after I started taking L-Methionine, and I sent a PM to Gabes and complained about the pains in the urinary tract. Then I stopped taking them for a few days, but as soon as I started taking them, the backpains started. Stupid me, I didn't combine the two experiences.tex wrote:Lilia,

So, I must have some issues down there, that comes alive with L-Methionine.
Now during the holidays it's impossible to get an appointment with my GP, and since it got better after stopping L-Methionine, I don't need to go to the Emergency Room.
Thank you Gabes and Tex! You are wonderful people.

PS: I take 400 mg magnesium. The microscopic blood has always been there (for 25 years), and doctors just say that "some women have a very thin bladder wall, so this is quite normal".

Hi,
I was quite desperate and decided to cut back the last introduced supplement, L-Methionine. That gave me some relief, but the pains were still awful. So, yesterday morning I quit all supplements. Today, the pain is finally gone. I have searched all my supplements, and they are all free of gluten, GMO and casein.
I have been taking vitamin supplements since the 1980’s. Maybe my body is poisened with supplements, and simply needs a rest? I don’t know, but I will try to stay off supplements for a few weeks, and let the body take over.
Which is a bad thing, since my diet is so limited I need the vital nutrients that I get via supplements. But it’s like biting your own tale; I suspect that some of my supplements hurt me, and at the same time I depend on them.
But, those back pains were so awful; could not sit, stay up, lie down or walk. So, I had to do something.
I would like to continue at least the vitamin D3 and magnesium, but I'm afraid to wake up a sleeping bear.
Maybe I just should wait some weeks, and see how long I can endure being so poorly fed and start introducing one and one supplement at a time?

Interesting. Hope that is the answer. I used to get back pains, not as bad as you describe, but they could be bad and every once in awhile debilitating. The back pain went away after I stopped taking a multi vitamin. I made some other changes at that time, so can't say for certain that was it, but the multi vitamin was one of the items that I suspected. I am more sure that the multi vitamin fatigued me, and would leave me in a fog for a half a day after taking.
Lilia,
I'm glad to see that you tracked down the source of the problem. Maybe, like me, you have developed a sensitivity to soy. Check those supplements for soy and tocopherols, natural tocopherols, mixed tocopherols, etc.
I agree with Blueberry that multivitamins are high-risk vitamins because they contain so many ingredients from so many different sources.
And your thoughts about waiting a while and then trying one supplement at a time sounds like a good plan.

Hi
I continued vitamin D3 and magnesium, and quit taking L-Methionine. But, I'm afraid that the same supplement woke up a sleeping bear. I got bladder issues right after starting L-Methionine. So, I started running to the toilet instead, not for D but for P.
I ordered both D-Mannose and a French product called Urisan Probiforte. The D-Mannose arrived before the Urisan, so I started D-Mannose.
Now I take both, which I probably shouldn't have, because now I don't know which of them has really helped me.
I'm delighted though! My digestion is perfect now, the burning in my bladder is gone - and typically me, I sit here and wonder which helped of the two products.
Maybe I should just forget about that, and enjoy that I feel so much better
Thank you Gabes & Tex.

For the sake of good order, I enclose a link to the Urisan product. When I study the contents more closely, I suspect that this is the one that has helped me.

Lilia,
D-mannose works for treating and preventing UTIs and related issues. Here's an old thread from 6 years ago when we first learned about how well it works:
Progress report and supplement that's helping

I'm afraid I have had this bladder problem for a long time, because the feeling I have now is new to me and so strange.
I will not go into details, but this feels really good!
It's scary to think about how an unormal situation becomes "normal" over time. Maybe my other health issues have overshadowed the bladder problem. After all, both the bladder and the stomach are located in the same area, and when it hurts and you have constant D, you blame it all on the stomach.
As a person once said "Because you are gluten sensitive, that doesn't mean that other things can't make you ill".
PS: I have never understood the difference between sick and ill, so maybe I'm using the wrong word.

Hi all,
In 2013, when my MC was at it's worst, I also tried pro- and prebiotics, which didn't help at all.
For the last 5-6 days I have taken a cranberry concentrate (Vaccinium macrocarpon), which also contains inulin from chicory root, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacilus casei. Along with this I have also taken D-Mannose.
Not only has this helped my UTI, but also my digestion. According to the Bristol Chart, I'm now on a 5, and I have only two BMs in the morning, with 15-20 minutes between them. The BMs don't wake me up any longer, I can sleep as long as I want to.
