Hi all,
I have come in contact with a young woman on the FB-forum that we started when Norwegian politicians banned private import of supplements in October last year.
She is 29 years old, has had digestion problems all her life, and the problems culminated after she was involved in two car crashes 3 years ago, where she was given tons of medications that ruined her health. All doctors had given her up, and she was only getting palliative treatment (I don’t know if this is the proper expression for it in English), but it means that you don’t get any medications just painkillers, and you are left to die.
She has seen a doctor of functional medicine for the last year, and she is no longer bed ridden. Among other things he found out was that she was «overmethylated». (She can eat/rotate 4 different foods).
Yesterday she received a long e-mail from her doctor, telling her that he has misinterpreted the test results for her methylation, and that she is «undermethylated», not overmethylated. And for one whole year she has been treated as if she were overmethylated…
She doesn’t speak English, she has hardly been to school all her life, so I have offered to help her a bit. Her doctor cannot receive her in the office, but I cannot go into that story.
Since I joined this forum I have tried to understand methylation, but find it very difficult.
What are the main things one must understand regarding undermethylation, are there common factors that apply to all people, and what do you find to be the most efficient as to food and supplements?
I would love to offer her some help.
Grateful for all input & advice.
Lilia

Lilia,
This is a very, very complex topic, and precious few doctors in the world know enough about it to speak intelligently about it, let alone treat it correctly. The doctor treating her has to be unfamiliar with methylation issues, or he wasn't thinking at all. How could she have possibly been overmethylated? She would have to have been overtreated. One does not accidentally become "overmethylated" That can only happen from taking too many "methylating" supplemental treatments.
Basically, she will need to take the active forms of vitamins, rather than the cheap, common forms. For example, for B-12, she would need to take methylcobalamine, not cyanocobalamine.

Methylation Issues
Gabes has posted a lot of information there. I have methylation issues, but I should point out that I believe some of my methylation issues were caused by a magnesium deficiency.
By the way, "palliative" is the correct word. Your English is superb. As excellent as your mastery of the English language seems to be, your skills with the Norwegian language must be fantastic.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

methylation is super complex, and practitioners that have done courses research, are still learning as it is 'early days' of this being part of the diagnostic process. with the wrong approach a patient can go from under methylation to over methylation
there are over 30 processes in the methylation cycle, and each of them have impact on the status of over or under. To accurate assess this you need their full methylation profile from dna results.
as Tex mentions, the only 'common factors' are people should use active forms of B group vitamins, if people are deficient in other key nutrients then they will react to things like active B6 and active B12.
everything else is very very individual depending on methylation cycle results, current health issues, gut health, and nutritional deficiencies.
