Saw a nutritionist today trying to get rid of this reflux permanently if that's possible. Plus I thought he could order vitamin tests when needed. He works in an integrative med office. I saw a PA there a month ago and am changing to him.
The reflux comes and goes. I eat the same thing daily, unless I'm experimenting with one item. This guy has been gluten free since 92 and has had gut issues before that. In the last year, he has came down with other food sensitivities. He was pretty good and very open. He wants to see my Enterolab results and was right on track with the elimination diet. My only dislike was that he is wanting me to break open a capsule of probiotics and put extremely small amts on my food for 4 to 6 months, if it doesn't bother me. To me probiotics are like drinking a gallon of codliver oil . He's wanting me to do an experiment with betaine to see if I have low a stomach acidity. And try ox bile extract. We shall see, hopefully I can find it without covered in corn. I'm trying to protect my esophagus, stomach, and small intestine if I can help it ..

Have you read my article on controlling GERD without the use of drugs? You might find something helpful in there if you haven't already read it. It can be downloaded at the following link:

And please check out my new post (in this forum) on magnesium deficiency. I think you will find it very interesting. But I haven't posted it yet — it may be a few hours before I can write it. I have to do some other things first.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thank you. Tex! No I'm not going to take any meds for it, other than betaine. Do you think that would help?
Could my diet (or lack of food variety) cause my stomach to forget how to produce the amount of acid needed? I figured by now the absence of pepto or antihistamines would correct it. Although, it's still not as bad as it was while I took those.
I'll check out your magnesium post!!

Betaine might help because acid reflux is not usually caused by too much stomach acid — it's caused by too little acid, resulting in poor digestion, and that's why antacids and PPIs can make reflux problems worse. But the betaine dosage has to be properly regulated. I would assume that your nutritionist knows how to do that, if he recommends using it. If he doesn't, we may have to look up some old posts here that describe how to find the ideal dose.
I'll try to post that magnesium info now.

That sounds good Tex! He gave me a printout on how to self test for low HCl and the result to expect and where to go from there. I'm going to have the baking soda close, all I need are stomach ulcers now.
I really don't like taking any meds, even supplements. Wish me luck!

Martha,
It's a shame that this disease forces us to become our own guinea pigs because the only way to find out if a treatment will work for us is to try it.
Best of luck to you — I hope that the betaine will either help or at least not cause any problems.

I just did some research on this website about reflux. Jean pointed out a couple of years back that a low carb meal helped him. I actually thought about this a few weeks ago and forgot. That is basically all I'm eating and protein. Could that be my problem?? Now the million dollar question is what do I eat besides carbohydrates? I can't totally cut it out, but I can lower it or remove for a few days.
I typically eat rice (1.5 cups) with ground turkey for lunch, then a baked potato with turkey breast for supper and lots of cauliflower. The only vegetables I can tolerate (I think) are cauliflower and green beans (frozen of course).
Still going to try betaine as soon as I can order it......
Thank you all so for any advice!
Tex, thank you so for your knowledge and helpfulness with everything!!

Yes, a few members here have recovered on an almost all-meat diet. If I were going to select from the carbs you mentioned, I would be inclined to suspect that grains (IOW, rice) would be more likely to cause reflux problems than the vegetables you named. Potatoes would be next in line because the one thing that grains and potatoes have in common that can be a problem is their starch content. That differentiates them from the carbs in vegetables.
But keep in mind that I'm not an expert on food chemistry — my forte is WAEGs.
And as always, you're most welcome,

Most of my meals are 2/3 protein, 1/3 carb. The main carbs I have are sweet potato, cauliflower and carrot, these three settle the best for me, are readily available, suit budget etc. white potato is sometimes food.
I only have rice in the form of rice protein drink.

Thanks guys, I'm going to increase my protein and decrease my carbs. I've really been eating the potatoes and rice, just because it really fills me up and sticks to my ribs. I've actually gained 3 lbs, I believe due to my protein shakes....

Thank you Brandi! No I'm definitely not taking anything like that. I didn't know about the Alzheimer's and PPIs, scary. If I take anything it might be tums, but I haven't taken those in awhile. I thought trying the betaine though. I didn't know that about d3. I'm taking 8000 units.
I'm leaning the cause towards all those potatoes and rice I've been eating for months....going to remove for a bit to see. Who knows, I hope it will resolve quicker than it came .

I just had a follow-up with my GI NP about the xray for my reflux. She said that the reflux is in my mid region above my chest, mild to moderate. Anyway, I told her I believe that I have low stomach acid and that I tried betaine last night, which helped (just one tablet). She was clueless about all that. Is that crazy or what?? Would you not know about low acid too? She couldn't give any reasons why this may have just showed up. Just blow me smoke, I'm paying for it!
Oh well, nothing surprises me anymore.
Going to increase my betaine up one pill to see what happenes. I guess I should take it with every meal too.
