Laryngospasms at randim times......

Post by HappyBird »

For the past thirty years, the first time was after surgery, I had my first laryngospasm. I am not sure if these episodes are related to allergies but they very well make have some connection.

Thirty years later I find they come on for different reasons:
Pickled onions, gritty gluten free bread (with very dry crumb), nuts, food with small particles, fluids that go down the wrong way and just about any other random eating event.

I always start breathing again, have never passed out but find eating out very embarrassing if this happens. I always fear some over enthusuastic soul grabbing me to do the Heimlich Manoeuver at a time I can't breathe. The laryngospasm could easily be confused with choking - it produces very noisy stertourous breathing.

I can't talk when this happens and get distressed, I have to concentrate on relaxing and forcing air through my larynx till it opens and I resume normal breathing. It can last about
a minute and be very stressful for all concerned.

Anyone else have this experience or know of anyone who does - I feel quite alone with this malady. Any information or personal experiences of how to deal with it are most welcome. Have you witnessed an episode like this even - please share.
