Senate Committee just passed U.S. bill to prevent state mandates on GMO labels effectively killing Vermont's resolution to require all genetically modified ingredients to be declared on all ingredients labels, and any future States that would want to have GMO ingredients declared on labels.
I realize this is a complex issue since many people could be affected by this as in farmers with GMO crops suffering financially, food prices in grocery stores going up, but on the other side it also seems like yet another case of corporate interests winning out over the public wishing to be better informed about the food they are consuming.
The evidence on GMO foods causing health issues is so far quite contradictory. Short term effects from human consumption have not shown any major links to any health-related issues, but it is still unknown if there are long term effects that will show a direct correlation (eg. increasing obesity epidemic, diabetes, etc.)
What are any of your thoughts on this, all being people who are much more conscious of what you eat, the ingredients that you allow into your body, and the effect they have on your health?

HI Chef,
Beings I have had to end up eating some pretty bland items and mostly White Rice, some potato, Meats, and overcook veggies and my genetics from 23andMe have pretty much concluded that my Colitis stems waaay back probably anywhere into the North Western Europe area with potential for the date to be anywhere from 100yrs to 6000yrs based on my Maternal Haplotype h, it is really hard for me to know where the GMO thing draws the line.
Since my DNA said I should not be eating gluten, and I had been for 47 years, and just stopped it last year, who knows what we are getting into with genetically modifying our foods. The packaged stuff on the shelves is a heck of a lot worse for people I think.
A part of me feels our food evolves on its own over time anyway (in a kind of gmo type of way wouldn't ya think) I know we humans help the process out a bit, but it may not be any worse for wear on us as it may just help our DNA to evolve to catch up with it. Unless this is the needle that breaks the camels back because our DNA cant evolve quick enough and there fore it could be the beginning of an explanation to some sickness that ails us until we reconfigure ourselves again with a bit more of this or that as far as supplementation goes.
I guess I'm on the fence about this, just giving my two cents worth.
Cheers
Erica

I know GMO is a hot issue with many, causing great concern. For me since I tend to avoid grains, which from what I understand is a main area for GMO development it hasn't been something I think much on. I have noticed that many companies voluntarily label their products on whether they are GMO or not. After seeing that, I've often though that could be a solution for those concerned about the GMO issue.
Yeah I am on the fence with this as well. For years I have eaten corn and soy (the two most GMO food crops worldwide) without any 'apparent' issues.Erica P-G wrote:HI Chef,

I think for me the two issues that bother me the most are: 1) the desire of the majority for more information is squashed by the special interests who would stand to lose from it, and 2) there are some disturbing trends in North American nutrition with obesity, cardiovascular, cholesterol & diabetes (I guess it is all lumped together now and called metabolic syndrome) -- once almost unheard of in our youth -- but now is much more common to see in younger children, suggesting something is seriously out-of-whack with both the food we are eating as well as the level of daily physical exercise to stay fit, and no one in the positions of authority seem to be taking the action required.
HI Chef,
Yes I agree with your two issues also....about 10 years ago maybe 20 when I was 28-38 yrs old I used to buy coco puffs cereal, at some point when I did the taste began to change and I stopped buying many different cereals lucky charms was another. I can remember in my childhood they tasted really good, didn't have a chemical after taste as they started to when I was in my twenties. Maybe it could be hormonal changes but there are other foods out there that the tastes have not differed like I noticed with the cereal products.
I can remember being a very active child (but then I didn't have videos, DVR, Gaming....I rode a bike, swam, roller skated, and rode horses). Life has changed for the next generation....and it is complicated to get some of the 'fun physical' back into it.
