Daiya gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free pizza

Post by Martha »

I've been pretty outspoken in my opinion that fake cheeses, including Daiya, are not worth the money.

The other day I was shopping at Sprouts, and saw that they had g-f, d-f, s-f pizzas by Daiya on sale. $7.99 down from $9.99. So I decided to give it a try. The picture looked really good.

I ate it for dinner Thursday night. The package said it was 3 servings. I ate half of it with a salad for my meal. I guess I could have eaten less, to make it be three servings. The good thing is that I had no reaction to it, so the everything-free part is okay. The not-so-good part is that it isn't really worth the money. The crust was kind of tough, and the cheese, as I expected, didn't melt. As I was eating it, I was thinking, "Rice and chicken would taste better." But it was a nice change from my normal diet.

If you're dying for a pizza, and you haven't eaten real pizza in years, give it a try. If you're expecting it to taste like a real pizza, you'll be disappointed. It seems like nobody has been able to produce an excellent cheese substitute.

Okay, that was quite the negative endorsement. Actually, it was better than I expected. Just not like the real thing.

Thanks for the review, Martha. Pizza is one of the foods that I really do miss.

The Daiya blocks melt better but they are hard to get they sell out fast in my area so I buy the slices not the shredded.
I prefer cheddar or provolone, I really don't care for the mozzarella.
Does anyone have A good pizza crust recipe?

Terry, I have never made gf pizza because I don't tolerate gf flours very well. I make pumpkin bread with almond flour but even that is only around the holidays. If you google gf pizza crust you should be able to find some recipes. I have seen pizza crust recipes made with plantains but I have no idea how that would taste.

One of the first things I crave when I've changed my eating plan, and I've tried many weight reducing diets over the years, is pizza. Not one of all those diets included pizza. Now that just cheeses me off. Glad to see this post so I won't mess with this product.

I don't care much for the Daiya products that I've tried (haven't seen the blocks of them) so might try that, but the shredded didn't melt, and it just didn't taste like cheese, and so I decided to just live without it! :) It was the mozzarella that I tried so maybe the others taste better.

That Russo pizza has dairy so those of us that have to do without dairy also can't eat it either! I do make my own pizza with just Pesto pizza sauce, hamburger, and black olives, and it's just fine for me! I use a pizza crust that I get at a local gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and egg free bakery in my area.

There are lots of things I miss not being able to eat, but not enough to suffer the consequences so............................

Jari, Your pizza sounds great to me! I have been afraid to try anything tomato based but maybe I'll give this a try.

Marcia,

I was scared at first........I am about 9 months in now, but I've been eating tomato based for awhile.............I used diced tomatoes with either green chilies or jalapenos in my beef stew I make (for flavor since broth and all the Lipton soup bases have soy and other stuff I can't have in it), and the Prego sauce is the only one that doesn't have soy in it (at least that I've found). I don't overdo it, but I've done really well with it!

Thanks, Jari. I'll try a little sauce and see how it goes. I'm thinking I might try a small piece of home grown tomato this summer...I miss them so much.

Hi Martha,

I have tried most of the Daiya products and, like you, I don't think they did a good job on the pizza. However there are 2 products they make that have become staples for me. The first one is a block of Smoked Gouda cheese. May be it is the lack of cheese in my diet over the last several years, but I really love both the texture and flavor of it. The other item from Daiya I like is New York Cheesecake. Even people who don't have problems with gluten/dairy/soy like it. If you don't tell people what it's made of before serving it, they may not even realize that it's not "the real thing":). Anyhow, you might want to give these couple of items a try, if you haven't already.

Love,
Kari

Kari,

Thanks for posting that........I just the other day saw the cheesecake and thoughtm "Oh my, I wonder if this is any good or like all the rest." But on your recommendation, I will have to try it now.

Thanks for telling me about those Daiya products, Kari. I'll be on the lookout for them. I haven't seen any blocks of Daiya cheese, but I haven't been looking, either.

My husband loves cheesecake, and I used to google recipes for diary-free cheesecake. He finally pointed out that he can eat both gluten and dairy, so there was not need to make him a special version. He's right, so I just buy him real cheesecake, and let him enjoy the real thing! If I can find the Daiya one, I'll get it and see if he can tell it's different.

Love,
Martha

I tried the cheddar block daiya cheese and couldn't tell the difference between real cheese and it. Pretty good, but my gut didn't think so. Sadly i stare at the cheese every time I open the refrig cause I hate to throw it in the garbage 😀...
