Mayo Clinic

I noticed that Mayo Clinic updated their page on MC and included the following regarding treatment through diet. It's nice to see the medical community coming around.

"Diet and discontinuation of medication

Treatment usually begins with changes to your diet and medications that may help relieve persistent diarrhea. Your doctor may recommend that you:

Eat a low-fat, low-fiber diet. Foods that contain less fat and are low in fiber may help relieve diarrhea.

Discontinue dairy products, gluten or both. These foods may make your symptoms worse.

Avoid caffeine and sugar.

Discontinue any medication that might be a cause of your symptoms. Your doctor may recommend a different medication to treat an underlying condition."

This is great to see. Altough I'm sure they don't have a total understanding of this disease and how complex it is, this is certainly a start.

Yep, the GI department at the Mayo has traditionally been mighty hard-headed about this topic for a long time. A few years ago one of their more progressive GI docs blogged about similar diet changes for MC, but that blog soon disappeared when the head of the department caught wind of it. It's good to see that they are finally learning a few things about MC and eventually they may become qualified to treat the disease.

Thanks for pointing this out.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

 Having Mayo as my PCP I got a chuckle out of this. They were certainly clueless nearly 6 years ago when I began this adventure.

Thank you for posting this. My PCP is also with Mayo, and like with Deb, they were totally clueless 6 years ago which is also when I began my journey with MC.

Now I'm looking forward to seeing my PCP in a couple of months.
