H. Pylori and MC
Hi,
I'm new here and was diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis in December (2015), right after I graduated college. I was also told I have H. Pylori in my stomach and would need to be on antibiotics for 6 weeks to get rid of it...
I'm not sure how long I've had MC before my diagnosis BUT I have always had stomach issues and when I take antibiotics, I get diarrhea without fail. Last spring I was on it for a week and didn't get rid of D for another 2 weeks. The antibiotics I was given to take this time are amoxilicylin & doxycyclin. I also am thinking about starting budesonide because I'm wanting to take a road trip in May.
Has anybody gone through anything like this or taken budesonide while on antibiotics and prevented diarrhea? Any advice or experience..I'd love to hear!
Thanks,
Jenna

Hi Jenna
I was diagnosed with LC at the same time as you...December 2015. I am on Budesonide now but I haven't taken antibiotics at the same time so I can't help you there. Budesonide hasn't taken away all my symptoms but it has definitely lessened them.
My problems started way back in 2011 after taking amoxillcylin. Those antibiotics totally messed up my gut bacteria. Before that I had a cast iron stomach and could eat anything. I think most of the reason for this is because I had a virus and hadn't eaten for several days. So I was taking antibiotics on an empty stomach. So please make sure you eat with the antibiotics even if the packet says you don't need to. I was again on this same antibiotic in Novemer 2015 and I didn't notice any worsening of my MC symptoms (which hadn't been diagnosed at that point).
Anyway welcome to the group and I hope everything goes really well and that you are able to take your road trip in comfort

welcome...... one of our members recently cleared a BAD H-Pylori situation
She used the combo of antiobiotics and natural support. She got the natural info from a book and facebook group 'Gut Health Protocol' John Herron.
I will send her an email and ask her to drop in and add to this post.
Re Pro-biotics, for some reason, when MC is flaring probiotics dont work - for most they can actually make things worse. Once the gut has settled and there has been good healing then pro-biotics seem to do ok... i had good results with SB Boullardi.
Good luck on your healing journey

Gabes,
I'm actually taking a probiotic now (not sure which one at the moment) and have noticed it's helped. My flares aren't horrible ever since I've cut out gluten/dairy and spicy stuff etc.. I've also started acupuncture and have noticed a little bit of a difference.
I would love to hear from her about the H. Pylori.
Thanks so much!

Keep up with the acupuncture, it will keep the inflammation levels balanced - maybe that is why the pro-biotic is providing benefit
one thing with the H-Pylori, check any supplements for B6. B6 feeds the H-Pylori.
I have sent the note to Lesley, hopefully she will contribute in the next day or so...

Hi,
Reading this I wonder if H. Pylori - and especially the medication to cure it - might be one of the possible common factors inducing MC. I tried to find out whether there has been run a poll on the board regarding H. Pylori, but I could not find one.
I had H. Pylori 12 years ago, but back then I was healthy and happily ignorant of what would happen to me, so I didn't keep a record of my health issues and the medications I was given. Doxicyclin and the likes scare me.
Has a poll been run as to H. Pylori among our members?

Hi Jenna,
Welcome to our Internet family. I've never taken budesonide, nor have I ever tried to treat H. Pylori, so I can't help with your question.

Lilja,
I don't believe that we have ever had a poll on H. Pylori, but we have had a poll on antibiotic use:
Do You Believe That Your MC Was Caused By Antibiotics?
One of the problems with H. pylori is that virtually everyone has them in their stomach, but for most people they never cause any significant problems. In fact they can have certain protective benefits (the details of which I don't recall at the moment) against certain health issues. So the fact that they can be found there is not necessarily evidence that they need to be treated.
Another problem is that an H. pylori "infection" can be very difficult to diagnose (accurately), and even more difficult to treat (effectively). The antibiotics prescribed to treat it are typically very hostile for MC patients, the patient's gut biome, and the patient's gut health in general.
In fact, in some cases it's possible that the inflammation (gastritis) is caused by the same type of T cell infiltration that is a diagnostic marker of LC (in the colon), but this may be mistaken for an H. pylori infection because doctors do not realize that LC can (and often does) affect the stomach and small intestine, just as it affects the colon.
The use of probiotics is a "feel good" measure that may possibly reduce the chances of developing a C. diff infection as a result of the treatment, but with repeated use of such potent antibiotics, a probiotic cannot possibly protect the existing gut biome from destruction, and the currently-available probiotic products cannot restock the species found in the original prevailing gut biome.

Thank you everybody for the information. I'm feeling even worse about all of this just because I feel like my doctor was kinda just like "this is what you have, and here take this."
Tex,
what treatments have you tried? or do you just control your symptoms with your diet?
Thanks for all the insight. I'm still so new to this and want my life back! I am only 22yrs old

Jenna, I am not currently taking a probiotic. I was previously but then I read on the MC Foundation newsletter than probiotics can sometimes prevent us achieving remission. That coupled with the knowledge that even though the probiotics can be beneficial they don't normally stick around and we have to keep taking them. However the probiotic that Gabes mentioned (saccharomyces boulardii) is a beneficial yeast and seems to be in a different category and has shown to be very beneficial especially for diarrhea. I will go back to taking that but for the moment I am just taking Budesonide, Vitamin D, Magnesium and addressing my diet.
Antibiotics can be like a nuclear bomb to the microbiome, and that is what happened to me. It created severe dybiosis. I swore I would not take antibiotics again but I got quite sick this past November with a lung and bladder infection and I really did have to take the antibiotics. Antibiotics can be a life saver but we are seeing an overuse of them and now we are seeing the consequences.
It really would be helpful for you to connect with other people with H. Pylori. Gabes mentioned the 'Gut Health Protocol' facebook page and I don't know for sure but there is probably a H. Pylori facebook page. Then you can talk to others about what results they are achieving with the antibiotics and the herbal treatments.

I am not sure how long I have to stay on Budesonide but definitely longer than six weeks. My prescription said one month at 9mg daily and then reduce down to 6mg for a month. And then drop down to 3mg but I am not sure for how long. But then my GI doctor (who is really nice) rang me to see how I was doing. I was already down to 6mg and he told me go back up to 9mg for two weeks and then drop down to 6mg for two weeks at which point I will see him again.
Six weeks seems a short time. What dose are you on?

I was diagnosed with H Pylori and CC at the same time. My GI prescribed the 6 weeks of antibiotics with Florastor to try and keep the D at bay. Surprisingly enough it worked. Might be worth looking into.
Nothing helped the D until the H Pylori was dealt with. It seems like diet did very little for me until after treatment. I do remember finding one study linking H Pylori and MC, but the number of subjects was limited.
Make sure you get tested again to make sure the H Pylori is undetectable. After that it might help to look at iron levels b vitamins etc. Mine were all low because H Pylori impedes absorption AND metabolises these vitamins. Nasty little things.
Goodluck!
