Yonana Machine

Post by jlbattin »

Ok, I saw one of these the last time I was in Costco and then did some research online and checked out recipes. I thought that this would be great for this summer when it gets hot and I need something cool. Do any of you have one? Do you like it? I'm going to pick one up on my next trip to Costco.

Jari,

I have one that I bought last summer. It works OK. It's not very aggressive so you pretty much have to push the bananas through it (using the plunger/pusher provided), though that can be done much easier if you do as they suggest and wait a few minutes for the bananas to partially thaw before proceeding. The first banana mostly stays in the device, so it takes at least 2 bananas if you want to see any significant amount come out into your bowl. Then you recover the other banana by disassembling the machine and using a spoon to recover the rest of the banana. Since I'm alone, 2 bananas is really more bananas than I care to eat at any single time so this device seems better suited to a larger family. IOW, since you're going to have to wash it later anyway, you might as well process a few bananas while you're at it.

The output is excellent though, just like some sort of frozen banana ice cream. It makes a great cold desert/snack. I got lazy and stopped using mine after a while and just went back to eating a frozen banana with cashew butter smeared on top. But reading this is making me hungry so I may have to try it again when summer gets closer.

It never occurred to me to run a bunch of bananas through at one time in order to be more efficient, and just stick the bowl in the freezer for later use. I might have to try that to see how it works. Probably the trick to making that work would be allowing it to thaw to the proper stage before digging in, but I'm just guessing.

Thanks for your reply, Tex. One of my favorite treats (before MC) was a couple of scoops of pineapple sherbet with a little bit of unsweetened pineapple juice mixed in like a milkshake. It was so good. I was thinking frozen pineapples would really be good in that and frozen blackberries too (and without all the sugar and everything else that what you buy at the store has).

I'm gonna go ahead and get one. We're looking at a pretty major snow storm moving in tonight and tomorrow (I'm really done with winter), and I'm so ready for warmer temps. So, it's hard to think of a cold frozen treat right now, but soon!

Tex, I haven't tried a banana in a long time. Do you buy them greenish yellow and then freeze them immediately with their peeling on? I know I couldn't eat them everyday, but something cold would be so nice. I can't eat that frozen SO coconut cream (it was good though) or coconut milk for that matter due to guar gum.

Jari, I haven't tried pineapple. Apples bother me so I just assumed all fruit would. I need to try that...

I've stopped eating enjoy life cookies for snacks and am doing pretty good (still need get a handle on this reflux though  ). I would love a snack besides potato chips and rice cakes with honey...

Martha,

Yes, I buy them a little green and as soon as they are barely ripe I peel them and put them in ziploc plastic bags and freeze them. If I wait a day too long they can cause problems because histamine increases relatively rapidly as they continue to ripen. I usually try to pick small to medium size bananas so that 3 or 4 of them will fit in a quart-size ziploc bag. When I get one out of the freezer to eat it I lay it on a paper towel for maybe 5 or 6 minutes or so to thaw slightly so that it's not quite frozen solid. You'll soon find your preferred thaw time.

I had to stop eating potato chips, not because of reflux, but because they were so greasy that they tended to give me a belly ache if I ate very many of them. They're considered to be a reflux-causing food. I wonder if they could be contributing to your reflux problem.

I had to avoid all citrus fruits when I was recovering, and even today they don't work very well for me, so be careful with pineapple. Maybe try a little at first.

Martha,

When my reflux and heart burn was at its worst (when I was first diagnosed), I was determined to get off the over the counter meds as soon as possible.....so, about 2-3 times a day, I added a little honey to a cup of water and heated it for about 30 seconds, then I added a capful of apple cider vinegar......it tastes nasty, but it really helped with my reflux and heart burn........

Wonder what brought it back? Since I really cleaned up my diet, I haven't had any more problems...........

Thanks guys, I will stop the potato chips and see what happens. I'm tired of eating them anyway. I'm going to try the bananas. Would love to eat a fruit instead. I eat small amounts of apples with nut butter once or twice a week, but have to be careful not to eat too many. They show up the next day.

The Apple cider use to help but I believe now it's too much acid instead. I'm doing considerably better than 2 weeks ago. My other son has that stomach virus now. My husband is the only one left that it hasn't struck. My diet is really clean besides the chips and occasional 8 ounces of coffee or Pepsi sugar. i know that doesn't help.....

I have been able to eat those little fruit cups of fruit (I've tried pineapple, peaches, and pears)......the ones that are just in water and don't have the excess syrup and sugar in them....................

I believe this is the one I eat and do really well with:

http://www.delmonte.com/fruits/peaches/ ... -100-juice

I don't do them every day.......a couple of times a week is all..............

That's why I'm thinking I can get buy with frozen pineapple in the yonanas machine................
