weaning off of PPI

Post by lighthouse »

Hi, I am moving along this journey. I have been off of the PPI for about 10 days. Trying to manage with zantack. I am wondering how long it might take to have the les function properly? What I've noticed is less urgent diarrhea, which is a good thing of course. The other thing I have noticed is that I am finally being able to know when a specific food makes my symptoms worse. Lettuce is a no no. Sometimes a more complex food makes it hard to know what in it gave me trouble. I had 2 pieces of a breakfast pizza 3 days in a row, and I had the worst day I have had in a long time. I lived in terror all day at work that urgency would hit me while I was on the phone. It did have spinach and little slivers of sausage on it, so I guess either of them could have been the culprit. I also weaned myself off of the endocort. This has made my arthritis pain increase, but I can deal with that easier than worrying all of the time about where the nearest bathroom is. I still always scope that out anyway since all of this is so unpredictable. My next step is to have my doctor order the testing from Intero Lab. As always, any input is appreciated. Thanks, Bernice.

Hi Bernice
how long things can take depends on so many factors.. the food we are eating; do we have enough Vit D in our cells, lifestyle, how much stress there is around us, hormones etc etc each persons journey is different

When there is inflammation it is best to avoid high fibre type foods like Lettuce. It is great that you are able to tell when a meal or ingredients are affecting you
re the breakfast pizza, there are many ingredients that can cause issues. For some too much processed flours type items can cause issues, the sausage can be high histamine and have a combo of meat ingredients that it would be difficult to determine which one is causing issue. and if it had cheese, then the dairy is also highly inflammatory

to optimise healing and getting off the PPI's I encourage you to avoid processed food items as much as possible
Meals that are bland, well cooked, ie soups and stews, vegetables and safe protein - are less inflammatory, easy to digest (ie it takes less energy)
re the arthritis symptoms - are you taking Vit D3 and magnesium? have you had your Vit D3 level checked in the past 6 months?

Already take magnesium and D3. Thanks for diet advice. Edit field seems very small. I take humira for ankylosingspondolitis which the endocort helped also. I have eliminated chocolate, mint, and tomato trying to control gird. I tried giving up coffee, but frankly, I couldn't function without some in the morning. I might need to try something other than the zantack, because it doesn't seem to be doing much good.I make lots of homemade soups and I have been trying to stick to less raw vegetables. Thanks for the suggestions. Bernice

Hi, Bernice.

Do you take glucosamine for your arthritis? Before I starting taking it, the arthritis in my hands was so bad that I couldn't move my hands in the morning. My husband would bring me a warm rice pack to hold every morning to loosen them up. It was hard to hold plates or cups without being afraid of dropping them.

I started taking glucosamine chondroitin, and in a month or so the symptoms began to abate. Now my hands are pretty much symptom free. I buy the pills at Kroger, their store brand, and they are free of gluten, dairy, and soy, which are the things I have to avoid.

This was before I got MC, and taking the glucosamine doesn't bother my MC.

how much D3 and Magnesium are you taking?
when my gerd was bad, i was taking at least 7,000iu Vit D3 daily (sometimes more)

the other aspects that helped minimise the gerd while i was healing
raised bed,
not having coffee near any meals
do not do housework or bending after eating
stress management/relaxation etc
eating small portion meals slowly
having evening meal at least 2 hours before i go to bed.

Bernice,

It almost always takes at least several weeks before the LES can regain a significant amount of strength, but it will continue to strengthen as long as you can avoid the PPIs. It may take several months for it to fully recover it's strength.

I have also taken glucosamine for over 15 years, to reduce joint wear and inflammation. I also take a flax seed oil capsule each day for joint health.

humira. Before I started taking humira I had to lean on furniture to move around my house. Blind people aren't very good with crutches. I'll consider the glucosamine again.
I take 50,000 d3 once a week which keeps my blood level at a good amount. I have added another pillow, and I keep the zantack on my head board, so I can have it half an hour before my coffee in the morning. My doctor said to much magnesium can contribute to diarrhea, is that your experience. I could add more. I'll just try to be patient and give the gird more time to get better. I'm very patient with other people, but I always expect my stuff to happen right away. Today was a horrible MC day, and I had just said yesterday that things seemed better. I can't figure out anything I did differently yesterday except I started taking a probiotic again yesterday. I can't imagine that did it. I will be asking my doctor to order the testing from intero lab as soon as he writes something else I asked him to do. I don't want to overwhelm him with requests. Finally getting onto this list and being able to communicate is the first hopeful thing that has happened for me related to the MC. Thanks, Bernice

Bernice
many here use the topical magnesium (spray/lotion and/or foot soaks) this is a good way to get high doses of magnesium without causing gut issues.

When we are inflammed, pro-biotics can cause issues for MC'ers. This has been a common reaction for many here.

And yes, patience and time is an essential part of healing...

Thanks, Where do you buy magnesium spray or soak? I wonder how a pro-biotic that is supposed to aid in digestion can cause trouble for us? Seems like we need to be scientists or doctors to know how to help ourselves. Bernice

Bernice,

For decades the American Gastroenterological Association Institute advised all GI docs to recommend the use of probiotics to treat MC. In December, 2015, they reversed their opinion and now they specifically recommend against using probiotics when trying to achieve remission from MC. We on this discussion board have advised against using probiotics for years now. Most of us can tolerate probiotics after we are in remission, but they either do not help or they make our symptoms worse when we are trying to recover from an MC flare.
