My diet observations........
Hi all,
I wanted to share my observation with you and welcome feedback so here goes.............
I have started the South Beach Diet the first of January. I have mostly eliminated starches and anything "white" (ie, sugar, flour, bread, potatoes/starches)
I have found that I have increased some of my fiber (ie, Triscuits, flat bread, (wheat), etc.), I have also eliminated my cream soda!!! YEA!!! I drink plenty of water and diet Sprite or V8 juice. I have not eaten potatoes since beginning the diet and have not used any coatings on my meat unless using a liquid marinate sauce. No frying unless with Virgin Olive Oil. Totally changed the way I eat. Here are my observations:
I notice that if I eat a "roll up" (turkey breast, mayo and flat bread or wheat tortilla) on day one - I can not eat it the next day. The same for fresh veggies and lettuce. I am able to tolerate it but on a limited/rotation basis.
I do however feel 80% better than before the diet started. I choose to call it a better way of eating healthy as apposed to "diet" but you get my drift. I am experiencing gas and grumblings in my stomach (upper left quadrun) and occasional D. The D is also different (dark muddy color) and explosive. I am wondering if I am changing my digestive system, increasing too much fiber (wrong kind?), have developed MI's. Lots to sort out but to make a long story short, I do feel much better and the weight is slowly coming off!

What are your thoughts on this? Anyone? Anyone? (Sorry, Ferris Bueller moment there! )

Hi Mars,
Congrats on the results. You deserve good results--you've been working hard.
It sounds as though you may be gluten sensitive. You might try sutstituting corn tortillas, in place of those flour tortillas, and see if that doesn't help. Your gut probably just needs to heal, before it will tolerate the lettuce, especially. I think that lettuce is more aggravating to a sensitive colon than just about any other regularly tolerated food. I'm still afraid to try it.

Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Liz,
I find that many of the foods listed on the SBD are hard for my digestive system to tolerate (ie, raw veggies of all kinds). The diet is separated into 3 phases. #1 is the "clean out" phase where you mainly loose the excess water. Most of the weight loss in that phase is just that - water loss. It does however motivate you to continue because of the large amount of loss the first 2 weeks. In my case it was 13 lbs I think. It also helps to eliminate cravings for the foods you shouldn't eat.
The second phase slowly introduces those foods you did without on Phase I. I have chosen to eliminate fried foods, fatty foods, white sugar, flour, potatoes, pasta and soda from my daily intake. I am able to eat these things on a limited basis however, if I choose to. I have not,YET.
Phase 3 is the phase where you reintroduce more things into the diet but it is the phase you use when you have lost all of your weight and you want to maintain that weight.
I think I need to begin my exercise program soon or my flab will stay flab!
I feel lots better now but still struggle with the suggested foods since the MC keeps me from digesting them well. I bought a veggie steamer and have been using it. I also will eat canned veggies like green beans but rinse all canned veggies before eating them.
Lean meats are the only thing I buy. I usually prepare them in the broiler, George Forman or in the oven.
Although I am still having trouble working out the yea's and nay's I am still loosing weight and feel much better. As of this morning I have lost 19 lbs!!! YIPPIE. The best part is that I have much more energy and feel so much better.

Hi Margie,
I've been trying fiber lately, because if I don't get my cholesterol down I'll have to start meds, and they're REALLY expensive. I'm taking small small bits of Equalactin (a type of fiber that is supposed to not cause gas and fermentation problems) along with my Caltrate. You could knock me over with a feather, because it's helping me. I think that although I get soluble fiber through fruits and vegetables, I'm missing insoluble fibers, or something, from not getting grains. So I'm trying to get the fiber without that "fermenting" portion of the grains that causes me trouble.
I hesitate to even mention this, because we're all so different. I know any fiber suppliment would be hideously bad for most people here. But, there you have it. This isn't advice, I'm just throwing it out there.
