Turmeric for GI Inflammation

Post by DJ »

Has anyone tried turmeric capsules for GI inflammation? There is quite a bit written about it. On another note, my friend with VERY advanced rheumatoid arthritis started using turmeric and she is very happy with the results.
I found a warning that people with gallstones should not take turmeric. I wonder what could happen. I have two big fat gallstones that were identified about 35 years ago but I don't believe I've ever had an attack.
I would love to know if anyone has tried turmeric.
Thanks.

Hi dj, I can't tolerate the tumeric pills but I sprinkle the heck out of tumeric on my sweet potatoes. Tumeric works best as an anti inflammatory when combined with a little black pepper.🍴

I've been taking turmeric capsules for a few years. I have not found it helpful with my MC.

my understanding is, that turmeric will help to heal leaky gut - this does not protect MC'ers against MC inflammation reactions if you have contact with triggers etc...

as I pondered this further.... in my 6 + years of being part of this group and many hours of research about health and inflammation, no one thing can heal leaky gut. It takes a combo of inputs.

Vit D3 alone wont do it unless you have magnesium, amino acids/proteins, etc
protein alone wont do it unless you have the right nutrients
yes, tumeric will help heal leaky gut, its effectiveness will be reliant on all the other key elements to healing, manageable levels of inflammation in the body, suitable eating plan and lifestyle plan and the cells having the right combo of nutrients to be able to heal

Thank you all for you input. I tried 450 mg twice yesterday and things seem the same. That's good news. After 9 days of Pepto, I still have D but it is not watery and it is less painful/urgent.

I am currently taking:
turmeric 450 mg - will try 3 times daily
calcium 500mg with magnesium 250 mg
magnesium tablet 250mg
krill oil 500 mg
zinc picolinate 12.5 mg
b complex (methylated) 1/3 capsule (I make my own) The full dose causes a systemic rash.
liquid vitamin d 2000 to 5000 IU daily
vitamin c 500 mg

I eat a sweet potato nearly every morning for breakfast, rice products, lots of meat, and I am now working my way back up to small amounts of cooked fruits and veggies.

DJ, I tried turmeric a few years ago, baaad reaction. You are fortunate you are able to tolerate it because it is highly recommended for inflammation, including arthritis.

The only other comment I'd make is to think about adding copper. I have mild macular degeneration, doctor recommended the eye vitamins that have proven helpful. Since they contain soy, couldn't chance it, so had to replicate the entire formula. It was recommended that copper be added to zinc to balance it. The eye formula has 25 mg zinc and 2 mg copper.

Good luck! Beverly

I took it early on but it hurt my stomach. It was recommended to me by my cousin whose son takes it for leaky gut. I might try it again sometime since I still have the bottle.

I forgot to mention that I am also taking Pepto six times (on average) daily and I am still having D. The turmeric does not seem to make the D better or worse. Beverly, what king of reaction did you have?
Thanks.

Hi DJ, just saw your question. My reaction to turmeric was major D, kind of felt like it tore up my gut. Live and learn. My most recent forays into things that worsen D are as follows: Saw a naturopath last December to get an LDN prescription--I tried 4 doctors who refused me. The ND seemed to know a lot about MC, she had even heard of and supported Enterolab! Anyway, she suggested collagen, think it was supposed to help inflammation, but especially for arthritis. Bad idea, at least for me. Big time D. Next, I was having trouble sleeping, so tried an herbal tea supposed to be helpful for sleep. The last ingredient was licorice, another bad idea. Checked and it's supposed to help with constipation!

She also suggested L-Glutamine, which I'd tried before, maybe a small help, but she said capsules aren't strong enough, 5-10 grams a day are needed. So I got some Now Foods powder and think about 6 G have helped somewhat. The LDN has also helped somewhat. (but I just love the added energy it gives me!) Nothing seems to be a panacea, but every little bit of help is appreciated, and of course I'm extremely compliant with diet and the things Enterolab identified as problems.

Thank you Beverly. It seems that turmeric may have added to my ongoing problem with D. I stopped the turmeric and I went from watery D with chewed food back to non-watery D. I tried LDN in the past for pain and it didn't help. I may try it in the future for MC but I'm returning to potatoes, rice and meat to stabilize for now. If things don't improve, I'll be on Entocort again.
