Runny nose and eyes
Since the onset of LC, I have had a runny nose and watery eyes. Does anyone know if this is part of LC symptoms?? All I can get from my Dr. is the problem is allergies. My Dr. gave me a Rx for a nose spray. My nose and eyes are still running. Any ideas??

Hi,
Those symptoms don't come from the MC itself, but from a very commonly associated inflammation problem known as mast cell activation disorder (MCAD). MCAD is a very common problem for many of us here, including me. Mast cell problems can actually trigger MC flares, and many of us have to do everything we can to reduce histamine levels in our diet and suppress pollen allergy symptoms in order to control our MC symptoms. 99.9 % of physicians are completely unaware of the association of mast cell issues with MC, because the association has not been researched and therefore it is not in the medical literature.
IMO you would be better off using one of the common 24-hour antihistamines than using a nose spray. Many nose sprays are addictive, soon become ineffective, and tend to cause more problems than they help, including causing physical damage to delicate tissues in the nasal passages. But there are other things that you can do to help, including making diet changes to minimize foods that contain high levels of histamine and foods that trigger the release of histamine. You may find the information in the short articles at the following links to be helpful.
What are mast cells?
How are mast cells associated with microscopic colitis?
How do I know if mast cells are causing problems for me?
How are mast cell issues treated?
I hope that some of this is helpful.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Taking Sudafed
Is Sudafed an Ok med. to take for the runny nose?

I'm not aware of any issues that would make Sudafed unsuitable for use by MC patients. Most members here just take an OTC antihistamine to treat runny nose and similar symptoms. For sinus problems, using a Neti-Pot seems to provide the most effective treatment in most cases. But it's best to use it as a preventative, before sinus congestion turns into an infection.

Hi, I'm not Sudafed will help very much other than dry the nose out, and then there is potential for nose bleed. It also can potentially speed up the heart (they were supposed to remove that part in the medication but not sure).
I would stick to an antihistamine....I was getting along kinda ok with Claritin Reditabs, but with this new pollen hit over the weekend I ended up reverting back to the Allegra 180mg to get ahold of my runny nose and watery eyes, such a pain! I know taking Allegra is not my long term option (due to my DNA analysis) but I need relief and I need to revaluate my foods to see which ones are upping my histamine so I can back off in that dept until this pollen time period settles down again.
At night I would take a benedryl and during the day work with antihistamines to see which one seems to respond to you the best (Zyrtec, Claritin Reditab 10mg, Allegra 180mg).
Hope you get to feeling better soon!
