My new profile picture

Post by Gabes-Apg »

thanks for the compliments about my updated profile picture
it is way way cooler, in its full presentation

It is me in the drivers seat of a restored (modified) 1957 Chevrolet BelAir Sport Coupe (owned by my Brother) it has become 'Gabes Chev' for the car show events that we attend.

Image

In Australia, owning and showing classic cars is not redneck (feral/bogan)- Alot of upper working class, lower and upper middle class etc will own the cars and take them to the shows . ( my brother has 2 x 1937, 1x 1955, 2 x 1956, 2 x 1957 Chevrolets)
My brother is part of a car and dance club called 'All Shook Up' and they are asked to provide dance demonstrations etc at alot of these car show type events. it is a good bunch of people. All the ladies wear 1950's attire including petticoats etc there is a combo of mustangs, chevys in the group

I love these events, there is no focus on food or alcohol. I can take my own Gabe safe food, enjoy a day out that costs me nothing ( other than an early morning start to put my hair in to 50's glamour mode!)and I enjoy taking photos of the dance action

as it is an american model, it is Left Hand Drive - which takes a bit of adjusting for the Right Hand Drive roads in Aus!!

Hi Gabes,

I love your new profile picture, and your interest in cars from the '50s. The same here in Norway, interest in old American cars is not only an interest of rednecks.

By the way, you look very healthy on the picture!

I love your new profile picture Gabes. And I love your hot red car. I don't think I could cope with the steering wheel being on that side though

Looking good and looks like great fun! I knew that Oz had an active hot hod community. We have a very distant Australian relative that for the last few years has visited my fathers hot rod hobby shop in the mid-west of America. The two of them have a time working and looking cars over.

My father when he retired began working on old cars, fixing them up. So far in his garage he has a 57 Chevy convertible, 62 Corvette, 32 Ford roadster which won a few awards. The big award winning car he helped rework, along with a few others, is a 69 Firebird. It was featured in several magazines and was a top 5 award winner, I believe, at the Sema hot rod show in Las Vegas. I didn't attend the Vegas show, my energy levels are not the best, but the family had a good time being there. Some pictures of the Firebird can be seen here:

i'm not all that into cars myself. With poor energy levels it takes away from being much involved in the hobby. A number of years ago though I helped rebuild a 75 VW/Porsche 914 converting it into an electric vehicle. I'm thinking this summer if my health improves I will upgrade the electric car, making it more reliable, would be nice for it to have longer battery life, and be quicker in speed. The 914 is my favorite vehicle to drive of them all personally but it has its quirks.

I owned this type of car for 22 years until I couldn't keep up with its maintenance, but still wish I had it to this day because it was a fun car to drive. Then I bought a 1999 Trans Am and drove it for 7 more years....I finally decided I would just visit car shows and admire them from afar now.

Maybe I'll have a midlife crisis and invest in the newest Camaro that looks and feels just like the Firebird, it is my facebook page cover :-)

Just love older cars and especially the muscle cars.

Sweet! I always enjoyed the looks of the Trans-Am. There popularity certainly seems to be growing in the hot rod world. I chuckle a bit when I see the 70s cars now showing up at auto shows and winning top awards. I'm old enough to remember when the cars were new.

My oldest nephew is now old enough to drive. He wanted to take the Firebird to prom and was lobbing his grandfather. Granddad said yes last week, but his mom to our surprise said no. She thought a girl would not want to be seen in such a car! She might have somewhat of a point as instead of seat belts the Firebird has racing harnesses, and it is suggested to wear racing helmets.

I suspect the Firebird is the last car to be rebuilt by us. Going forward my guess is maintenance and upgrades to the existing cars will be done. We will have our hands full with that.

Really cool picture. Love the car and the sunglasses! I learned how to drive on a '57 Bel Aire standard, 4 door, tourquoise color. That was in 1965. Good times...
