BM Question
I was wondering for those who are in remission, are your BMs like those who don't have this disease? Also, do they feel normal when you pass them? I clearly still have a long road, but my BMs have gone from WD to "cow patties". I know that's a good start! Just wanted to see what the norm could be. Sorry so descriptive !
Thought about trying out my cholestyramine again. Its been awhile.....
Thanks guys!

Martha
keeping in mind that I have multiple health issues etc
for me my poop changes day to day.
one day, it can be 'MC Mud' (cow patties) in the morning and near normal in the afternoon. and the next day, near normal all day
in times of stress or fatigue, urgency returns and potential accidents can happen.
After extended periods of constipation, I dont mind this as my 'normal'
My MC was classified as being in remission via colonscopy in 2011.
Since then I continue to have a sensitive digestive system, stay on a bland low amount of ingredients eating plan.

I have to agree with Gabes and all her descriptions.
I have a range of normal, from mud to fluffies, snakes, you name it...I think the term Normal will be different for everyone. When it isn't WD, anything other than that is a welcome for me.

Hi, Martha. I am "normal" most of the time. BM looks & feels like before I had LC. If I stray from my typical bland diet then it changes. Hang in there!

Thank you guys, that's puts it into perspective! I had stopped analyzing it until recently and thought maybe I should try the cholestyramine. Sometimes mine changes in mid stream
Yay, I'm still on the road to recovery!

Martha,
Yes, BMs that change characteristics during the day (or during a single BM episode) are common during the healing stage.
Also remember that "normal" people do not always have "normal" BMS. BMS are very dependent on diet, especially fiber content, moisture content (dehydration can cause C for "normal" people), and spices. For example, "hot" Mexican food and certain spicy oriental dishes tend to cause D for "normal" people. At least that was my experience long before my symptoms began.

Thanks Tex,
I tried the cholestyramine last night. I noticed gas and gurggling, not too uncomfortable through the night. I woke up to no BM or urgency. It may be a fluke. But that was a good thing. I so wished they wouldn't put extra ingredients in everything. I'm going to try half the packet tonight to see what it does. I can do without the gas cramps, but the calm morning was so nice!

I'm not sure I ever have had normal BM's, although my issues didn't start until almost a year ago (in retrospect, they may have started much earlier than that........I just wasn't aware).
But add in the MC, and that brings in a whole new level of something (I'm not sure what)............I count any day that I don't have D to be normal these days........and I haven't had it in a long while, but depending on what I eat, and more than anything, depending on my stress level, BM's can be very different.

Thanks Jari for your input. Prior to MC literally, my BMs were clockwork and the same size no matter what I ate. Pinto beans to salad, I had a gut of steal . Oh how that was nice, but no D is good now. I'm with you, just wanted to make sure that was the "normal" everyone was talking about.

Well the chloestyramine was a fluke....and the following day it only postponed the D. Also it caused worsening gas and bloating each night after I took it. But strangely in the am it wasn't an urgency to go like before. It postoned my BMs to later that day. I thought I may increase it to 2 packets but that's for another time. Maybe when allergy season is gone and I've healed a bit more. I can't tell if it helped or not. I think the inactive ingredients didn't help....
My BMs are not acidy yellow, which I would think would indicate BAM. Who knows at this point though. I'm drawing at straws again
Thanks for listening....

What is BAM?
I have had those yellow acidic poops and you mentioned something about BAM, what is BAM?Thanks

Martha-thanks for asking this question since I've been wondering the same thing. I don't even know what is normal any longer. Coming up on 1 yr since diagnosis-hard to believe! I am feeling much better in general but not quite there yet. Every day is different but noticing more days are consistently better than they used to be and that is progress. I also need to work on not worrying (or thinking) about it so much.
I tried cholestyramine for 3-4 weeks in March and it didn't do much for me-maybe delayed things a bit. Didn't bother me either but stopped using it.

BAM is bile acid malabsorption. Check out this thread:

Is there anything I can do to prevent the occasional BAM D? I don't want to take meds if possible. Perhaps I eat too much fat at times? I eat lamb every day and potato chips with olive oil as well as 1 tsp-1tbl olive oil. In general I have had mostly normans, with more than 2 normans per day once or twice a week. Thanks for any feedback
