Budesonide

Post by mjgarr »

How long can you stay on Budesonide? My Dr. only wants to see me every three months or so. When I am not on the meds. I have systems.

Hi MJ,

According to recent resesarch, it's possible to safely continue to use budesonide for years. If your doctor wants to cut off your prescription before you feel that you are ready, show him or her the medical research article at the following link:
Conclusions Budesonide at a mean dose of 4.5 mg/day maintained clinical remission for at least 1 year in the majority of patients with collagenous colitis and preserved health-related quality of life without safety concerns. Treatment extension with low-dose budesonide beyond 1 year may be beneficial given the high relapse rate after budesonide discontinuation.
Low-dose budesonide for maintenance of clinical remission in collagenous colitis: a randomised, placebo-controlled, 12-month trial

If your doctor is not willing to accept that article and continue to prescribe budesonide, it might be time to consider switching doctors. Many members here have found that if their gastroenterologist will not renew their budesonide prescription, their PCP will do it.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
