probiotics
Do any of you use probiotics? If so what kind? I read that Culturelle might be good for MC but also noticed that it grows on whey so it may contain traces amount of some sort of dairy. Also if you are intollerant of casein does that mean your intollerant to Lactobacillus casei? That strain is in my probiotic that I use (VSL#3).
Dr Fine test shows positive for gluten and casien but negative for soy, eggs, and yeast
Maybe its UC maybe its MC? Who knows at this point, but at least I know my intollerances now... so heres to the road to healing!

Hi Terps!
I know that Dr. Fine considers probiotics as an essential part of the treatment tregimen for MC. Yes, I believe there may be a small amount of dairy in Culturelle......I think Dr. Fine believes that it is miniscule and should not cause much problem. You also should have no problem with the L casei if you are casein intolerant.
Do you know the difference between lactose intolerance and casein intolerance? In lactose intolerance, one reacts to the milk SUGAR, which is lactose. Thus, dairy products that are lactose free (like hard cheeses aged more than 6 months) are allowed. In casein intolerance, one reacts to the milk PROTEIN, which is casein. Unfortunately, no dairy products are tolerated, since casein is in everything - butter, ice cream, yogurt, cheese, etc.
My GI doc just told me about a new probiotic called Flora-Q. Haven't tried it yet.

Yes, I take a probiotic, but I'm not totally satisfied with the brand. My naturopath is ordering a high dose probiotic for me called Replete which is made in England. I haven't received it yet. A few goods brands I've heard of our Thorne, Tyler, and Wakunaga (Kyo-dophilus). I think it's essential for most intestinal problems.

Celia,
Re the probiotics from England.........the issue of deactivation of the live bacteria because of airport x-ray machines has been raised. I'm not sure what the thinking is now, but you may want to check it out.

That's a great point Polly. I will check to see if they are actualy manufactured in England. My naturopath says she has had great results with these company's products. I only found out about the England connection when my husband checked it out online later.
I will look into that. Thanks. Celia
