Protein

I'm searching for ways to increase my protein.

I remember there was discussion about a recipe for turkey patties (or something like that), that could be popped out of the freezer and eaten as needed. I've searched the archives, but can't seem to find the recipe. Can anyone be of assistance? Any other tips on protein? I always have protein at lunch and dinner....I don't have as much for breakfast.

I've found that since my diagnosis, I can't function any time without protein. I'm not sure what you can or can't eat. But, I buy the Jimmy Dean all natural sausage in the 3 pound roll at Costco and fry it all up at one time in patties. I freeze it, and I eat 3 sausage patties every morning for breakfast. Sometimes I alternate that with bacon. For lunch, I have been buying Boar's Head Oven Gold turkey deli meat at King Soopers. Sometimes I cook a turkey breast and just eat that for lunch. For dinner, I eat hamburger or other beef, or ham or other pork. Sometimes I make a beef stew with potatoes, carrots, and celery cooked in it.

I have some jerky that I grab if I feel I need it sometime during the day.

Thanks for the info Jari. I think I saw the jerky listed in what you packed for your trip, so I'll check that out. I want to up my protein throughout the day. Good to know you fry the sausage at one time and then freeze....how many patties do you make out of the 3lb. package?

PS: Jari, I looked at your trip items, but it didn't list the name of the jerky you found to be safe. Not sure I can handle the spices in Jerky, but would love to check it out.

Yeah, I need to go back in and write the name of the jerky, but I have to find the package first! :)

I use my electric knife and cut through the package on the marks that are there and I would guess there are around 35 - 40 patties (I can't recall right off the top of my head) but it's a good 10-12 days for me..............

I couldn't find it at Sam's..........I only found it at Costco............but sometimes King Sooper's (Kroger) has the 1 pound on sale and I buy it there................

Terre, I drink hemp protein power in almond milk for breakfast. Lunch and dinner is browned ground turkey breast, turkey breast cutlets,salmon, cod or grass fed ground beef. I also eat occasionally have Applegate uncured turkey and beef dogs (they don't have added fillers). I feel like I eat the same foods all of the time but I'm getting the protein that I need to stay healthy. I have bacon occasionally. Oscar Mayer is gluten & casein free. I take Epic bison bars on along when I travel.

Hi, Terre, recently I happened to see an article about items that have "more protein than an egg." I copied it down, but omitted some things I couldn't eat (yeah, discriminatory!) Anyway, hope this helps:

hemp, chickpea, black bean, kidney bean, peanut butter & peanuts, quinoa, lentil, amaranth, teff, pumpkin seeds, Banza pasta.

I make hemp milk, about 1/2 c hemp hearts (Costco, of course) to about 6 C of water, blend--in 2 batches if necessary--for 3 minutes. I've grown quite fond of the flavor, and use it in everything, sauces, etc.

Thank you all for sharing what works for you. Man, I wish we had a Costco! Oh well, I will look at our Sam's and then Kroger to see what they have to offer.

Beverly, I have never even seen hemp hearts, so I'll check that out....it may be something new that I find I like. I would never have thought I would go for Almond Milk, but have grown accustomed to it.....so old dogs can learn to like new things!

oh, so sorry you're not near a Costco. I live in a small town on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, and it's definitely the best store in town! The brand is Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts which is raw shelled hemp seeds. I notice that Jet carries it, but is only 8 oz--what I get is 28 oz for $12.49. Hope you're able to find it somewhere.

I checked out the Hemp Hearts at Costco and they do not say anything about being gluten Free.

wow, you certainly can never be too careful. The package says only hemp in it, no other ingredients. When I was out of town for a month last year I couldn't make my own hemp milk, so brought aseptic coconut milk. It's not bad, but thought it was a good test to be without hemp for a month just to be sure. It didn't seem to make a difference. Here is what their web site says:

Q.Are Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods products gluten free?


A. Hemp seed naturally does not contain gluten. However, only one barley or wheat kernel amongst 50,000 hemp seed can potentially result in a positive test for gluten. As the world’s largest hemp food manufacturer to grow, make and sell our own line of hemp foods, this one seed could inadvertently be introduced at any point. A single wheat or barley kernel could be introduced during harvest, seed cleaning, or even during delivery to our facility. This potential concerns us greatly.

there is a link in this discussion - Slide 9 has details on the minimum of protein required

from a MC point of view, I have 4-5 serves of protein a day.
When having meals the protein serving size is larger than vegetables etc 5/8 protein, 3/8 vegetables

I have things like cooked chicken, rice protein drinks for snacks.
