Question on past and what to try....any thoughts tex??
When I was in college I had these same symptoms. Lost weight, d, heartburn, burning stomach. It lasted for about a year or two. My gastrointestinal called it ibs and put me on. A small dose of Cymbalta and within a few days I had no symptoms and quickly could eat everything and gained my weight back. On Cymbalta you cannot fly....so I took a aircraft line job for 5 years. After a bit I was frustrated and quit Cymbalta to fly again. That was in 2009. If I went back on Cymbalta again would I expect same results?
Cymbalta is an antidepressive, serotonin- and noredrenaline uptake inhibitor, so what's going on in our digestion since we react positively to the medication? Could too much serotonin and noradrenalin give us D?

You may have had MC when you had that episode while in college but you were fortunate enough to have a period of spontaneous remission after that. In line with what Lilja posted, for a few of us, antidepressants can help by affecting motility rates. For others, antidepressants cause MC.
Is low-dose amitriptyline (Elavil) on the forbidden list? A few members here have successfully used low-dose amitriptyline to regulate their motility and help to stabilize remission. It works best for constipation-predominant cases, but occasionally it helps diarrhea-predominant cases also.
This involves 10 mg doses (no more than 15 mg). Normal therapeutic doses of amitriptyline typically run from 50–100 mg and higher when prescribed for treating depression. Normal therapeutic doses quickly become very addictive for many people, and we have 1 or 2 members who would like to wean off the drug (they're taking 80 mg or more) but are unable to do so. But the 10 mg doses don't seem to cause a dependency.
Is bupropion (Wellbutrin) on the forbidden list? It has less side effects than most antidepressants/anti-anxiety meds.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex, What can this do for us with MC?

It's mostly an anti-anxiety medication with antidepressant attributes. It's main claim to fame is that if someone needs a medication in this category, it typically causes the lowest number of side effects. That doesn't mean that it's a treatment for MC of course. It means that it's an anti-anxiety med that is typically better tolerated by MC patients than most of the other options.
Unfortunately it's often rated as one of the most ineffective antidepressants also, but you have to look at that in the proper context. Medical trials show that most antidepressants are no more effective than placebos. So when you're talking about an antidepressant, does the word "ineffective" actually mean anything? After all, they are all about as effective as a placebo.
And remember that there is evidence that most (possibly all) anxiety issues, panic attacks, and depression may be due to magnesium deficiency. But researchers have never gotten around to checking this out because they are making too much money developing new anti-anxiety and depression medications.
About 20 years ago, before budesonide was approved, antidepressants were commonly prescribed to treat MC because virtually all of them have "Constipation" listed as a possible side effect on their label. The problem is that they are just about as likely to cause D, as C.

Fascinating.....I kinda wondered as I couldn't put my finger on anything that Wellbutrin could offer the MC world. I don't respond to antidepressants or anxiety meds, but was curious if there was a connection of its use in MC.
