How do magnesium and melatonin help GERD?
Do they tighten the LES? Thanks much.

yes, muscles need magnesium to function properly
further; (from the book magnesium miracle)
Cells grown without magnesium were twice as susceptible to free radical damage
Magnesium is necessary to convert the storage from of Vit D into the active form (so it can calm inflammation)
Magnesium deficiency exacerbates a potassium deficiency

The main contribution of magnesium is to prevent muscle spasms. Muscles cannot perform properly without adequate magnesium. They cannot relax, and they develop tremors. A magnesium deficiency can prevent the pyloric sphincter (at the bottom of the stomach) from opening properly to allow the stomach to empty as food is digested. Food that remains in the stomach too long tends to ferment in the warm, moist environment, producing pressure that can cause acid reflux (upwards) because if the pyloric sphincter cannot function properly then the lower esophageal sphincter probably cannot function properly either.
Many of us have occasional gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying) when MC is active, and gastroparesis is a common problem with diabetes. But guess what? Both MC and diabetes are strongly associated with magnesium deficiency because both diseases deplete magnesum. In fact, there is evidence that Type 2 diabetes can be caused by a chronic magnesium deficiency.
Melatonin (in addition to having a hormonal effect on other hormones) is a smooth muscle relaxant. Smooth muscles are muscles that we cannot directly control. They are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Most of the digestive system contains smooth muscle tissue.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Janie,
As an farmer I would interpret that to mean that your dogs need salt. Or they might need magnesium. Animals crave (and seek out) trace elements that are deficient in their diet.
