Reading everything on here and what people have to say is confusing yet wonderful that I'm not alone...I have the task of connecting the dots and doing what works for me....it will take a while for sure....lol
Thanks Gabes..

high cholesterol is only one 'Risk Factor' in heart disease - and most health issues it takes a combo of risk factors (the same for MC)
this is a good article that may help make things clearer

that is what big pharma has trained them to do - the doctors are only following the system that pays themthese doctors scare you into thinking its hereditary and your doomed if you don't stay on it
the hard part about life with MC type illnesses - we have to make informed decisions about what is best for us, the individual, based on what is happening to us, with us.
look at our bodies 'wholistically' and make informed decisions about what is best for our health.
sadly the current health system doesnt work that way.
Its your body. Dont be scared to make decisions for you.
Do you have any of the other risk factors?
Are you doing good things diet wise and life style wise that can counteract risk factors?

if you reduce/transition off the statins, and the doctor gets upset - maybe give him a copy of this article

I'm 50 and on the "menopause struggle bus" at the moment....I have been for at least 8 years now....burning mouth syndrome is a big issue for me, 5 doctors looked at me like I have 5 heads on that one....gyne says its probs hormones..... I work out 5 days a week at least an hour and have lost 11 pounds so far, so I'm trying....I need another 10 to be happy with it...no other real risk factors in the family besides heart disease.

My tsh is always normal, but I wonder if there are other tests that go deeper into that....just like the celiac test is always negative and it's wrong......my mom had thyroid problems so I always bring it up and they look at their results and say, no your fine....I will check out the articles you sent....getting rid of the burning mouth would be like waking up on Christmas morning when you're 5 ! Lol
That's funny you say that Janie....my cardiologist also is the one who told me to take half and expected it not to change my cholesterol....my pcp always says there is no going back once you start....I will be retesting mine in July and will see how much it affected me....I'm anxious to see.
Has your MC gotten any better or is it to early to tell?

Lou Ann,
I took a statin for about 8 or 9 months (following a second TIA), but I stopped after I began waking up with my fingers locked into the extended position. The only way I could fold them down was to use the other hand to force them down. Sometimes it affected either hand and sometimes it affected both. A few weeks after I stopped taking the simvastatin the problem disappeared. Because of that, I've done a fair amount of research on statins. Here are my basic conclusions (based on statistics determined by health studies):
1. For people who have a known personal or family history of heart/cardiovascular risks, research trials show that statins do provide a small to moderate reduction in the risk of heart attacks.
2. Despite that reduction in heart attack risk, statistics show that statins do not improve/increase longevity (IOW statins apparently increase the risk of alternative mortality threats).
3. Lowering cholesterol levels has no beneficial effect on longevity.
4. For those who do not have a personal or family history of heart/cardiovascular risks, the adverse side effects of statins outweigh the potential benefits.
Incidentally, do you by any chance use a mouth wash? Or meat tenderizers? When I was in my early 20s I developed a severe allergy to a very popular brand of mouth wash. It would literally set my mouth on fire. Meat tenderizes have a more limited effect, but still cause inflammation.
There are many natural meat tenderizers, and they are often used as marinades because of this characteristic. Bromelain is a common example that can also cause mouth/tongue irritation. There are many other enzymes found in above average amounts in many fruits, including pineapple, lemons (and most other citrus fruits), papayas, kiwi, grapes, figs, avocados, dates, bananas, and mangos. These enzymes are capable of at least partially digesting proteins, fats, and some carbohydrates. Cooking usually breaks down the enzymes to turn them into a sugar, thereby preventing the problem.
I have a hunch that this may be the reason why some of us cannot eat some of these fruits (because we are more sensitive than normal to the enzymes they contain).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex,
I know a couple people who had similar side effects when they were put on statins also. I had one high reading when I was only 39 Years old and they stuck me on 10 mg of Lipitor because of my family history...A couple years later it was still up and they changed it from 10 mg to 20 mg .... And when I say up I only mean 202. When I think about it now it makes me mad that I didn't research it more, but we all grew up thinking doctors are God and you have to do with they say , plus they scare you . My cardiologist put me back down to 10 because my fasting sugar has been a little elevated and thinks going from 20 to 10 will not make a difference with my cholesterol number ( so why was I put on 20!) and might help my sugar number, because apparently Lipitor is causing diabetes in menopausal women. I'm not sure if that study is correct or not. I am quickly coming to the conclusion I should be my own doctor because none of them really care if you live or die. LOL
I stopped using mouthwash thinking that was causing my burning tounge , but it didn't help.
I also do not use meat tenderizers.
My GI says it could be from my acid reflux, my gynecologist says it could be from menopause and hormones.....I am hoping once I get my magnesium going and my B vitamins things might change a little… Baby steps of frustration, but a girls gotta try!
Thank you for your input as always appreciate it!
