it can take 2-4 months to correct deficiencies
Vit D3 wise, we use about 4000-5000iu per day (more per day if there is inflammation) so depending on how much Vit D3 you are getting from other sources 5000iu per day is not overkill for someone with IBD issues
same with the magnesium, we use about 300mg-400mg elemental magnesium per day. we used more than this, if there are health issues putting greater demand on magnesium use. again your current intake is not excessive

Hi Gabes Thankyou for you're reply. I hope you are keeping well yourself.
I made such an initial improvement on these two that I'm worried to reduce them but I've been on this dose since it was first suggested here well over 6 months ago. Just wanted to be sure I'm not poisoning myself with it. Thanks jim

in line with you investigating Mast Cell issues you might be interested in this post from January

with the level of symptoms you were having, you may be still fixing a chronic magnesium deficiency.

I take between 6000 and 8000 Vitamin D3 a day and my last blood work was 64 (up from 46 the last time) so I think that's a pretty good dosage for me. I think we use more than we think we do and especially with this disease.

Wow Jari, that is an impressive increase in number for VitD3, I am hoping that with my increase from 5000 to 10000 of VitD and with the new Re-Mag liquid I can increase my numbers like that for next year. I was at 43 in 2015 and only 45 just recently at my last exam, so it appears I am going thru a mag deficiency still, otherwise my D numbers should be more elevated than this.
Gabes, I may need to follow your regimen of 1000mg for a short spell and then back it to what I had been doing of 800, which at the moment I'm lucky if I am getting 500 the way daily life has been. Sooo back to the drawing board it is!

listen to your body
if your bowel motions get loose- reduce the oral magnesium
when the various symptoms linked to magnesium deficiency go away, drop the dose a bit. if they come back - increase the dose
each person is different so there is no exact science..
with the changes in soils over the past 50 years or so, we are no longer getting good amounts magnesium from food sources.
various aspects of our current lifestyle (pollution, pesticides, EMF/Wifi, biotoxins etc etc) put bigger demand on magnesium in our bodies, so my thinking is especially for those that have health issues, supplementing with magnesium could be a life long requirement.

magnesium?? - if there is too much magnesium the body gets rid of it. It is one of the only minerals that it does that with.
If you were having over 1500mg per day for extended period then yes there is a risk of toxicity, but for MC'ers the D would be really bad and you would have slowed down your magnesium intake well before the other health issues would have a chance to commence.

The risk of "overdose" typically occurs with compromised kidney function, because excess magnesium is purged from the body by the kidneys. If the kidneys are unable to function properly though, a buildup of magnesium can occur in the blood. This can even occur due to normal sources of magnesium in the diet (if one's diet happens to contain a lot of magnesium and kidney function is compromised), but obviously it's more likely to happen if supplemental magnesium is being taken in large amounts.
As long as one's kidneys are working normally though there shouldn't be any problems. If kidney function is less than optimal, then it becomes more important to limit doses to more modest amounts. There is little point in taking extremely large amounts of magnesium anyway, because the more we take, the lower the percentage we absorb. And any magnesium that is not absorbed, remains in the gut. If too much ends up there, it can cause D. IOW, as with many things, there is a point of diminishing returns.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Lou Ann, quite a few people use both oral and topical
a) less risk of causing gut issues taking too much orally
b) good way to spread the dosing across the day.
