I also picked up the paleo comfort food cookbook last trip to SAMs! I loved the pictures, but have yet to try anything yet. I also have the paleo dessert bible that I'm dying to try, but not quite ready for that yet. The best book I have found that I' m using is from America's Test Kitchen called Paleo Perfected. It has a great section on how to stock your pantry and how the the flours work. Have used two of the shrimp recipes and was not disappointed.
Back to the subject at hand..... I have yet to venture out with friends or family. I am so afraid of making a HUGE mistake that I can't fix! My sister and I ( we share a house) eat in or she goes out when she has to get a Mexican food fix. Other wise she eats what gets cooked...and I'm the cook.

Amen to that, Jari! I've actually had dreams where I ate something with gluten and I would wake up in a sweat. I won't ever eat of the forbidden foods again on purpose! Thanks for the cookbook recommendation, Brandy. I don't watch much T.V., I like to page through cookbooks instead.

I do not ever expect anyone to eat like me. Nor do I think it is a treat to eat out because there is too much of a chance of getting something unknown in my food that will make me tremendously sick. If I go out to eat, I order a baked potato and that is it and I do not feel guilty. I just want to survive and not be so damn sick. I do not need to eat the food I once at although I do at times miss it tremendously but to ever eat it again would probably kill me. I'm not willing to ever try those foods again. Not after all that I have been thru for the past year and I have had an entire year of being very sick, even with medication and GF/DF/and soy free diet. I no longer eat veggies/fruits/most meats/no seasonings. I am so terribly selective of what goes in my mouth and even then I get sick. It is going to take a long time for me to heal. I accept that. And no amount of guilt from a stupid waitress or family member will ever make me try a food I cannot eat. I know what makes me sick. It has been a long road of trial and error. But know your foods and stick with them and only them.
qac, I am sorry that your food choices are still so limited. I totally agree, my mother was determined to make something that I could eat even though I kept telling her not to. I know that I hurt her feelings, but I was not eating anything that I didn't see prepared or see the ingredient listing. Others just don't understand and I don't expect them to - just be okay with me bringing my own food to every function. I'm good with that so they should be, too. I hope you are able to have more food choices before too long.

I typically order water when going out with my family and it doesn't bother me. It bothers my husband more...
The one time it did bother me was when my 4 yr old daughter had a spring luncheon (Mother's Day) at her preschool. I decided not to go because I thought well there was nothing there for me to eat. Then all of the explaining that I had to do. I was ok with it until I saw on Facebook all the pictures of the mommys and daughters and all the things the kids had made. Crying was an understatement. That was really depressing! My husband told me to delete social media .

Initially, I would eat before or after going out with friends and just order water or tea while everyone else was eating. For some reason, this bothered my friends more than me. It made them feel guilty. I started bringing my own food if we went to a restaurant where I couldn't find anything safe. I got used to that and now feel less embarrassed doing it. I tell the waiter I have severe allergies and they never seem to mind that I brought my own food.
If traveling without the possibility of cooking myself I usually look for a sushi restaurant (it's a good thing that everybody in my family loves sushi). I order tuna sashimi and a bowl of white rice. Before MC, salmon was my favorite type of sushi. But that's pretty much always farmed and I am now way too scared to try it. Tuna and rice are both safe for me, they are readily available in sushi restaurants, and they arrive without anything added.
When we traveled over Thanksgiving last year and were delayed for several hours at an airport, we went to a Legal Seafoods restaurant. They were so knowledgeable about allergies. My three daughters said they needed to be gluten free and they immediately offered them very nice rolls (according to my daughters they were delicious). When the waiter asked me what I wanted, I started saying that I had a lot of allergies. The waiter then wanted to know what I was allergic to. I said I couldn't have any gluten, any dairy, any eggs, any soy. He surprised me by saying "Is that it? I am used to people with lots more allergies, that won't be hard to accommodate at all!" I could have hugged him! They were so careful making sure everything was safe for me, and making me feel so normal!
As for recipes, I love the Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook:

It has some really delicious ones in it. All three daughters have to be glutenfree, they are trying to decrease their dairy intake, my oldest one is vegan; my husband is the only one without any dietary requirements. My youngest one wished for a chocolate cake for her birthday. Before serving a cake to a big gathering I tried out some recipes. The one from this book was unbelievable! A non GF person even told me it was the best chocolate cake she ever tasted. The best part is that everyone in our family can eat it, even me! The book also has nice cookie recipes. I try to avoid sugar in general. But it is wonderful to find some safe recipes for special occasions!
Love, Patricia
