Questions about Stage 2 Diet
Hi everyone,
I'm trying the stage 2 diet, mostly chicken, potatoes, bananas, coffee with almond milk. I've improved the WD a little it's only about 3 times a day from 10. My question is if I feel low blood sugar can I have a Gatorade type drink? Or only water? Also I have a horrible sweet tooth but I'm eating cashew milk ice cream. Do you think that's ok for healing? I know everyone's different but I love the input. It's tough keeping this up with 4 kids and a super social husband, I feel like a recluse but I don't know how to handle social situations while being so restrictive. Any suggestions?

gatorade drinks can have too much sugar, and the colours and flavourings can be an issue for MC'ers
coconut water might be a good option
increasing protein intake at meals or snacks will help alleviate low blood sugar feelings.
so far if the cashew milk ice cream is ok for healing - depends on ingredients and how much sugar it has (and how much you are having)
Low inflammation, lots of animal protein is the way to optimise healing
this 'recluse' stage is not forever, it is what your body needs now.
a good options for socialising is, eat before you go, taking your own meals or using a protein shake.
there are rice based, or hemp based protein shakes that quite a few of us tolerate ok. I mix mine with raw cocao, bit of coconut sugar (good way to curb sugar cravings)
making snacks on things like Stevia is a good way to curb sugar cravings, but not irritate the gut with processed sugars
hope this helps
take it slow introducing new items - expanding the eating plan. while you are still having WD, there is still higher levels of inflammation.
are you taking Vit D3?

Thanks Gabes,
Yes I take 3000iu of Vit d3. For the protein shakes do you just use water or cocunut milk ? Do you think I can add red meat instead of just chicken? I've read all of your info from other posts, but was wondering about ketchup or mayo? If I find a vegan brand it should be ok right? Does vegan usually mean soy free?

Ketchup is tomato and may be an issue at this early stage )and can have spices/flavours etc)
as i am in Australia, I am not sure what products there are Mayo wise and what the ingredients are. at this early stage, any item with more than 4-5 ingredients is best avoided.
a safe way to add flavour to meals is coconut aminos - small amount when you are cooking.
I cook all my vegetables and meats in bone broth or animal fat and this increases flavour and keeps it moist.
that VIt D3 intake is a bit on the low side, you may need a bit more, up to 5000iu per day.
protein shakes, i use a mix of coconut water and rice milk.
for the red meats, i would go for lamb, venison, game meat approach. commercial beef does tend to cause people to react. (probably more so what they are fed ie grains, soy etc) some people do ok with Pork. It is trial and error for each person as to what settles ok.
before adding anything new in, I would increase the VIt D3 for a couple of weeks first.

I agree with Gabes — the only times that I feel low blood sugar symptoms are a few hours after I have a snack that contains only carbs (or at least minimal protein), such as Chex cereal. More protein is the answer. An alternative for something sweet would be some of the nut butters. Cashew butter seems naturally sweet to me.
I would think that most vegan products are probably loaded with soy or legume derivatives because vegans typically have a tough time maintaining their protein intake unless their diet includes soy/legumes.

Usually, but always read the back label to be sure. Also, many nut butters are made in facilities that also process peanuts, so be sure to check the labels for that (if you are sensitive to soy/legumes). Here are links to 2 that I use (because they are pure).Beccasue wrote:Thank you! Tex and Gabes! So nut butters are usually soy free? I will try those and the protein shakes :)

For me it did, but that may depend on the cause. Are you by any chance taking loperamide Hcl (Imodium)? This is not a common side effect, but it made me really dizzy, and I recall someone else here mentioning that it also made them dizzy. Even half a tablet was enough to make me moderately dizzy.Beccasue wrote:after healing does the dizziness go away?

Hi Tex,
No I don't take anything besides my thyroid medication and vitamin supplements. I also suffer from anxiety but I don't take anything for it, I just do breathing, meditation and yoga. I think when I am having so much WD I start going into panicking too and then it brings on my dizziness and anxiety feelings. That's why I try never to get the low blood sugar feeling, it's like the chicken and the egg for me. I'm fine cutting eve thing out but I like to have some yummy substitutions too. Thank you for all the support on here!

Beccasue,
I would expect anything vegan to use soy. Read all the ingredients carefully.
I found a soy-free mayo at Kroger. It is Smart Balance Light Mayonnaise. The bar code on the jar I have is 33776-02520. It contains canola oil rather than soybean oil. I called the company to check on ingredients, and they assured me that there was no soy, gluten, or dairy in it.
I have used it with no trouble, although I'm not a big mayo eater, so I haven't eaten much of it.
It is possible to make your own nut butter. I've made almond butter in my food processor. It takes forever, though, because I have a tiny food processor, and have to shut it off to let it cool down several times during the process. So now I just buy it at a local market that has grinders for peanuts, almonds, and cashews, and thus the nut butter is made right there on dedicated equipment.

Beccasue,
If the dizziness is occurring during episodes of WD, it is most likely a symptom of dehydration. Dehydration is very common with MC and it has caused many patients to end up in the ER.
But the anxiety symptom is somewhat uniquely associated with magnesium deficiency. That was one of my most puzzling symptoms before I figured out that magnesium deficiency was my problem a little over a year ago when my magnesium deficiency finally became so bad that it sent me to the ER. Dizziness is also a symptom of magnesium deficiency. I only had minor episodes of dizziness, but again, I couldn't figure out why.
Most of us who have MC are magnesium deficient. And of course dehydration is notorious for depleting electrolytes (and magnesium is an electrolyte), so a magnesium deficiency is surely made worse by the dehydration associated with MC.
If you're concerned about taking an oral magnesium supplement, use copious amounts of magnesium oil or lotion applied to your skin. This will allow you to rebuild your magnesium reserves without affecting your digestive system.

Beccasue,
This is a pretty mild dessert and this is made with rice milk, it does have a few other ingredients, but if you don't over indulge it ought to take care of the cravings until your magnesium levels get where they need to be, then those cravings will taper off (believe me).
I rub lots of magnesium oil and lotion on me daily, every morning (or when I can during the day) and I also ingest a couple Mag Drs Best Glycinate, and then I take a large lidded cup to work with me with the new Re-Mag liquid I just ordered (I really think this liquid addition to the water is helping quite a bit) I don't put but maybe 1/8 a teaspoon in my water but it is a start and I am getting used to the taste, it can take you by surprise if you don't dilute it with enough water at first. I think I may get around 700-800 mg daily with my routine. If I don't pay attention I don't get enough in a day and I start to notice real quick....and I also had my D checked and it is at 45....I'm working on getting that number closer to 60 so I am taking 10,000 VitD3 a day for a few months right now. Plus YES it helps with dizziness and anxiety a lot ;-)
Just Mayo (what Terry shared) or a Vegenaise Soy Free Mayo- I have just learned tastes really good with a dash of salt on red or yellow steamed potatoes, kinda makes it feel like a potato salad without all the other goodies we can't have or may not be able to have moving forward.
