buying ingredients for gluten free recipies?

Post by lighthouse »

I chose a few recipes from my new Braille gluten free cookbook to try. I have a volunteer who does my shopping with a list I email her. I couldn't believe how expensive everything was. A man came up to her in the store and said there is a web site where you can buy all of the flours and other ingredients for less than what the grocery store sells them for. Does anybody know about such a web site? Now that I have all of these expensive ingredients, I have to find the energy to make the dishes. I think the first one I try will be a vegetable stuffing for chicken. Thanks for any info you have on a web site. Bernice and the sweet Octane.

Hi Bernice,

We have a couple local stores that cater to Bulk items that you dispense yourself...I find those stores have way better per pound prices than prepackage name brand. If you can think of any of those kind of places near you I'd have your volunteer seek them out and see if they carry any of the items you may be looking for. The stores in my area are Super One and Andy's Market so you must have something near you as I'm in a very rural S.E. Washington area.

I have not pursued any online store yet for ingredients, perhaps someone can chime in about that.

Good luck!
Erica

I like and buy Better Batter flour. They quite often have sales on it and I have gotten it for less than $4 per pound in 25# boxes,
It does have xanthan gum in it. https://www.amazon.com/Barilla-Gluten-P ... B00IB1DA0W
I buy pastas by the case from Amazon. I like Barilla's the best. It is a corn and rice blend. https://www.amazon.com/Barilla-Gluten-P ... B00IB1DA0W
They don't make an egg-type noodle but I found this one by Schar's that I like. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008H ... UTF8&psc=1

I should mention that I have been fortunate to be able to eat most anything except gluten without problems. Deb

If there is an Asian store near you, you should be able to get at least tapioca flour and rice flour there at significantly lower cost than regular grocery stores.

I haven't ordered anything on line except almond meal from Honeyville. It is very good quality, and they often have sales, but it is still expensive.

I can't use any of the Schar products because they contain soy. Sigh. the Schar things taste really good. Jovial pasta is tasty, and you might be able to get that since you are in NY. I can't find it in Texas, but bought some when we visited PA a couple years ago. I usually buy Ancient Harvest or Tinkyada if I want pasta, which isn't often.

Good luck finding what you you need.
