Recent Information on the Use of NSAIDs for IBD Patients

Post by tex »

Here's an article discribing research which indicates that we may be able to use NSAIDs, after all. The article was directed to victims of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, but odds are high that it will apply to all IBDs, including MC. It appears that in the Pfizer study, on the use of Celebrex, there was no statistically significant difference between Celebrex and a placebo, as far as relapses was concered.

In the European study, which involved the testing of various NSAIDs, roughly 17% to 28% of those in the study suffered a relapse, within two to nine days. Therefore, 72% to 83% of participants could safely take NSAIDs for up to four weeks, without triggering a relapse of their IBD.

Based on these odds, if you have MC, and need to take an NSAID, for short term use, the odds are in your favor. Here's the article:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
