One More Question.......Mosquito Repellent?

Post by jlbattin »

Ok, all of you that live in mosquito land, what do you use for mosquito repellent? I'm about half scared to death of all of it, but I'm heading to Mississippi in a couple of weeks, and although I won't be outside much, I don't want to get eaten alive! They have always liked me a lot! :)

Some of my friends use Johnson Creamy Baby Oil and swear by it, but I looked at the ingredients and it has soy in it.

I am fortunate to live in Colorado and we just don't have mosquitoes often, if ever, so I've not had to deal with it for a very long time.

Anyone have some ideas for me? Thanks.

I've never used a mosquito repellant, even though skeeters are frequently fairly serious pests in this area. Fortunately I live out in the country, because my main method (smoking cigars) is politically incorrect these days, so it's probably not going to be a practical option for you.

Clothing color seems to matter, and so do fragrances, but if they're hungry enough, and you're a stationary target long enough, many of them tend to ignore such protocols. A good breeze helps, and so does staying on the move when no breeze is available. Sometimes it helps to hang out with someone they like better than you.

Hopefully someone will have some better options.

I use Bug Block by MadeOn.

I have the hard lotion bar, which gets soft in the heat, but not runny, but it's fine if you wash your hands. I also bought the stick kind, but I gave it to my daughter-in-law to use one the grandkids, so I don't know how it holds up in the heat.

The ingredients are beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, essential oils of citronella, cedarwood, and lavender.

We use Repel plant based Lemon Eucalyptus. They come in 4 ounce bottles and I got them on Amazon. Consumers Reports named it the #2 option and it has no DEET. In looking at the label, they do not list all the ingredients but in the Amazon reviews, there are discussions and I saw no soy, gluten etc.

Looks like the 2 pack is running $8 and change.

I am a mosquito magnet and it works quite well. My husband does a lot of yard work and has been happy with it. It does have a strong initial eucalyptus scent.

Tex, thanks for the laughs!

I did order a wrist band from Amazon that comes highly recommended, and I found a recipe using essential oils that I may mix up also. I am a mosquito magnet if I am where they are so I just thought I'd see what was out there that others were using.

Interesting, I did look at the list that Gabes posted and almost all of them have soy in them. Wouldn't life be so much simpler if soy wasn't so readily available?

Thanks for all the information!

You might want to try Thiamine.

I gave it a try and it seems to help. My mom was plagued with attacks with gnats when she goes outside and she reacts badly to their bites. She is asking me to order her another bottle. Worse thing that could happen is it doesn't work and you get a little extra B1.

I use Doctor's Choice brand though Amazon.
