What is the issue with grapefruit and meds?

Post by Umber »

I brought home some fresh off the tree grapefruit from Phoenix. I want to have one soooo bad but isn't there something about not eating it when your on meds? If so, why?

Hi Lori. There are restrictions with grapefruit & certain meds, especially cholesterol lowering drugs, but there are other restrictions too. Sometimes you can still have grapefruit but must not have it within 2 hours or so of taking the med. Have to look up other meds that it effects. We have a phone number here that you can call to check on this sort of stuff. You may have one where you are too.

Love

Hi Lori,

Liz is correct. Grapefruit tends to cause elevated blood concentrations of many drugs, which can cause very adverse and unintended effects. Here's some information about the effects of grapefruit on various types of medications:

http://www.holistic-online.com/Herbal-M ... s-home.htm

Once you are past the timeframe when a med is being absorbed into the bloodstream, it may be safe to eat grapefruit, or drink the juice, but I would suggest checking with your doctor, if there's any question about it, as the risk can be quite significant, in some cases.

On the site referenced above, actual case examples are discussed under the individual catagories for various types of midications.

Lori-----Lou had to stop the grapefruits also--due to the medication issues---and he would chow down on that fruit--
