Have you considered sugar as a source of your flare-up?
Hi all! After food journaling for a few weeks, I made the connection between sugar and flares. I started cutting sugar out of my diet. Yesterday I was at the supermarket looking for an after dinner "treat" and was floored to see how much sugar is added to EVERYTHING!! Now, I normally never eat fudge bars, however I saw them on an endcap display and was curious to see how much sugar 1 fudge bar had- 18g. Holy tamoly, that's 4 1/2 teaspoons. Anyways, for any of you still struggling with flares, consider sugar. One of the biggest things that I did-I cut out all the processed bars, even healthy ones like Larabars. Some of those bars can have 20-30g of sugar.

Jessica,
You're right on target. Gluten, alcohol, and sugar are the main causes of leaky gut. Until the inflammation subsides and our gut heals sufficiently, we can't produce enough of the enzymes needed to digest most sugars properly so it ends up in the colon where it is fermented by bacteria, producing gas, bloating, and D.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
The first thing my functional medicine doctor told me at my first visit was to avoid sugars in all forms, and by no means artificial sugar, no fruits nor vegetables high in fructose. "Eat only proteins, and make bone broth! That will be your diet for at least the coming 3 years"...
My worst reaction is to sugar alcohol, i.e. mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol.
