Question...going on an antibiotic
Sadly I didn't win the fight against the UTI. It was a close race though. I'm not sure which antibiotic the dr will prescribe yet, probably cipro. I have had so much trouble with antibiotics, I'm a little anxious to say the least. My problems range from yeast infections, to numbing hands and feet, to anaphylaxis. I'm trying to cover all bases. I was going to take probiotics and magnesium in pill form (my MC will be atrocious after I take these) in addition to oil and remag. Can anyone think of anything else that would help while on this?
I so don't want the peripheral neuropathy, so scary!
Thank you guys!

Martha.
For most of us Cipro does not affect our MC status. But Cipro (like all fluoroquinolones) has a lot of black box warnings. If you know that it actually causes you to have peripheral neuropathy symptoms (which is one of the black box items), you might be better off with another antibiotic, because peripheral neuropathy can be permanent. I'd be afraid to make a recommendation for another selection though, because most of the other antibiotic options cause D. It's hard to win sometimes.

tex, flagyl was the one that caused peripheral neuropathy. But I noticed this one has those side effects too. I took this 2 or 3 yrs ago and it didnt, prior to my MC diagnosis. But I had taken flagyl once before too. I'm at a loss....
Luckily, the dosage is only for 5 days...

tex, my hands and feet feel asleep and I had tingling in my legs, couldn't hardly use them when I took one pill of flagyl. I thought it depleted my magnesium so I uped it. It took 2 weeks to get better....

Hi, Martha,
So sorry you are having to deal with this issue. On top of all else ... antibiotics have always been a problem for me too, waaaaaaay before my diagnosis of LMC. I'm so old that I remember being given penicillin SHOTS for all my numerous bouts with strep throat as a child (ultimately had my tonsils/adenoids out, which did solve that problem but I guess they don't do that anymore). I'm so old I remember the first polio vaccines on the sugar cubes (and my mother, in fact, did contract polio as a child).
Have often wondered why antibiotic injections aren't given anymore ... why everything has to be in pill form, going through our system, GI system, everything, causing such side effects.
My thoughts are with you. Wish I had some insight to offer. Would talking to the head of your local hospital's ER help at all? Just an idea. They often have more cutting edge and out-of-the-box treatments and meds to work with. Please keep us updated. Sending good vibes and hugs!!

Martha,
Yes, rapid onset peripheral neuropathy is a known risk for metronidazole. Hopefully that won't happen with Cipro.
