Help for Great-Niece

Post by terre »

My great-niece is 15 soon to be 16 and probably has always had stomach issues (but always explained away)....well they seem to have gotten worse so her Mom took her to see the doctor, but she saw the NP. The NP suspects Celiac and did the blood test along with other bloodwork. She instructed my niece to start a GF diet and to give Zantac (to discontinue depending on test results).

The Celiac blood test came back negative (as I told her it would), but the NP said she has the markers for Celiac genetic pairings (?) My niece is wondering if they should agree to further testing for Celiac or just do the GF diet. She has concerns that her daughter will not adhere to the diet since she is a teenager and will want to eat what her friends eat. She is still taking the Zantac.

My niece says she only has BM every two to three days, is tired, has headaches and stomach aches.

Any advice I could pass along would be greatly appreciated.

I think right now she is wondering if she should do further testing for Celiac. As she and I discussed, if she is Celiac, the recommendation would be the same....omit gluten. I think that if she does further testing with no positive for Celiac, that it will be easier to continue to eat whatever she wants. Maybe the way she is feeling will help her understand the importance....but I'm not sure what you could have convinced me of at that age. Older is wiser!!!!!

My niece has been trying to learn more about gluten products and be aware of what her daughter is eating, but is still concerned that she will not adhere to the eating plan when she's with friends.

Thanks,
Terre

BTW, I know that Prilosec is a problem.....but what about Zantac?

Terre, It is very hard to change their way of eating as a teen but hopefully if she wants to feel better and begin to heal she will try it. My niece is 26 and was diagnosed with Crohn's/Colitis but she won't change her way of eating while she feels awful and keeps losing weight. When she is ready I will help her. In the meantime I hate to see her suffering.

Terre,

The problem with the official diagnostic criteria for celiac disease is that it will only detect fully-developed celiac disease and that's one of the reasons why only about 1 in 20 celiacs are ever diagnosed. It usually takes many years for the small intestine to develop enough damage to qualify for a celiac diagnosis because the villa have to be almost totally destroyed. The medical committee that made the decision that a celiac diagnosis requires a Marsh 3 level of damage must have either been retarded or a group of sadists.

Did you know that the PPIs, including the over-the-counter versions have been shown to be associated with kidney failure, and the law firms are lining up class action clients right and left? PPIs were also shown to cause cardiovascular damage in the study.

Common Heartburn Drugs Linked to Kidney Disease in Study

Zantac is an H2 blocker, and I don't believe any problems were found with H2 blockers in the study. In fact, the lack of endothelial damage associated with H2 blockers is what clinched the case against PPIs, because PPIs caused extensive damage to arterial walls.

Some of us react to H2 blockers, while others benefit from them. They are far, far safer to use than PPIs.

Marcia, thanks for your post and sharing your experience. She lives two hours away, so I haven't seen her to personally gauge how she is. Her mom (my niece) must have thought it was worth visiting the doctor....and definitely wants what is best for her daughter. You know the old saying "You can lead a horse to water.....".

PS: You know, in all honesty, I have times that I don't want to eat this way either. It has totally changed my social life with friends and eating out was one of the things my DH and I loved to do. I have a son and neighbor that smoke and neither of them is willing to give it up and look at it as "Hey, you're going to die from something!"

and seeing as C is a bit of an issue, dont forget to share information about Vit D and magnesium

the ongoing inflammation would be depleting Vit D levels.

I bet if smoking had a side effect of battery acid chronic diarrhea, they would give it up!!

thats the tough part of MC, there is only so much battery acid D that one can handle.

Absolutely, Gabes! I never think about cheating because the memory of the D is still all too fresh in my mind. {shudder} Terre, it is hard, especially eating out. My husband always looked forward to eating out on the weekends. I will eat out with him once a weekend but even then I'm reluctant. I would much rather eat at home now where I know it is safe. He got a smoker for Father's Day so that has been keeping him happy.

I agree with you Marcia....home is the best place to eat, but that wasn't our history before 2013. That was then, this is now.....could be worse.

My husband has a smoker, green egg, grill (a guy thing) and he enjoys using them all. Enjoy your meals prepared on his new smoker!
