Gluten Question
Hi Everyone
Have not posted on here much , I have had microscoptic colitis for about 3 years but not really have much of a problem with it usually go 1/2 times a day and have the explosive D and the tummy rumbles. So not on any meds but in the last few months I thought I would try being gluten free well it worked I was normal for over 6 weeks but then I ate some pizza and cake at a party ( yes I know I should not have LOL) and the next day its all back to where it was, I know that must have been what did it but now I have been good and its been 2 weeks and its still the same, should it take that long once I have upset it ?.
During the good 6 weeks I ate things that most people said can cause problems like nuts eggs and dairy so I figure I can eat this as about 1 year ago I had 3 months that were perfect but I was still eating gluten then too ? So a bit confused.
Hoping someone on here has had the same thing happen.

hi there
sorry that you have had the set back
inflammation and MC reactions can do this. I cant provide exact science as to why and some can enjoy long periods of remission and at a point in time, the flare starts and they struggle for months to get symptoms resolved.
a few reasons, and your issue could be one, some or all of these
a) as we age, the ability to 'bounce back' and heal deteriorates - it can take longer to heal from this type of flare up compared to 6 months ago, 12 months ago etc
b) deficiency in key nutrients like Vit D3, magnesium etc impact the bodies ability to heal from inflammation flares
c) toxins, and excess toxins will also impact the bodies reaction to inflammation and ability to calm down once inflammation has occurred, the flare may continue to react to food ingredients due to excess toxins. This also links in with the Methylation cycle and how well the body is clearing toxins.
d) stress, if there is more emotional and/or mental and/or physical stress now compared to previous times, this will also impact inflammation levels and healing time
e) hormones and other health issues. In this 3 years has anything health wise or hormone wise been going on. This will also tend to make things different.
when you were eating nuts and dairy (and even back when you were eating the gluten), you may have seemed ok, but these may have well been causing ongoing mild inflammation. Not enough for symptoms to be bad, but when other triggers came along, the inflammation burst a bit like a volcano, hence why it may seem worse and harder to calm down (does this make sense?)
My suggestion is, go back to the bland safe eating plan. Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Low Fibre (ie no nuts), easy to digest meals like soups and stews (easy during the aussie winter)
hope this helps

wow, thanks for posting all the links, very interesting, I guess it may take longer than I thought , I will try giving dairy a miss for a week and see how that goes, but scary that I could now be upset by a different type of food. I dont really each too much dairy , mainly milk so will have to something different, tried almond milk that was nice.
I agree with Gabes. The point is, do whatever you have to do to get back into remission, because that is the most important issue. After you have been in remission for a few weeks, then you can try to reintroduce milk or other dairy products back into your diet to see if you can tolerate it/them.Gabes wrote:My suggestion is, go back to the bland safe eating plan. Good luck with your recovery.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

sadly no - caesin is the item that is the issue in dairy (as per one of the articles i posted above)
Dairy is highly inflammatory to all people, not just those with IBD's. while you are inflammed or having triggers that cause inflammation, diary will make it worse and inhibit healing.
