If You Suffer From Migraines, Please Raad This

Post by tex »

As I have long insisted, magnesium is the most important treatment for migraines, but a couple of vitamins have also been found to be beneficial for treating and preventing migraines, most notably vitamin D and B-2. The article attempts to be "politically correct" by following official medical guidelines, but you would almost surely be much better off taking at least several times as much vitamin D as the article recommends. 5,000 IU is more like a reasonable dose.
Treating migraines with supplements

If you're taking supplements to decrease migraines, Teitelbaum advises making sure that your multivitamin has at least 75 mg of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), 1000 units of vitamin D and 200 mg of magnesium.

The three vitamins play an important role in optimizing a key control center called the hypothalamus, Teitelbaum says. This control center regulates autonomic function, blood vessel relaxation and contraction — a key player in migraines. "Riboflavin (vitamin B2), coenzyme Q10, and magnesium do this by optimizing energy production," Teitelbaum says. Melatonin is another supplement said to help. Teitelbaum admits it is not clear how the melatonin works, but says that it has been shown to help support autonomic function in other conditions as well.
Your migraines may have a lot to do with certain vitamins (or lack thereof)

Note that the article refers to magnesium as a vitamin, but this is incorrect. Vitamins are organic compounds and minerals (such as magnesium) are inorganic.

I will have to check my B2 in my diet....beyond that I have all the other concoctions to produce a great migraine thwarting plan

Thanks Tex...and I agree, it is all about avoiding sunburn and not the sun itself....

Excellent information, Tex, thank you!! I've been having a few more headaches lately, and it occurred to me that as I use the topical magnesium oil (twice a day, and I've gradually increased my dose) it is definitely a salt and I can tell I'm getting dehydrated more easily!! Such a juggling act!! The magnesium is finally at a level where I really feel the positive effects even in my brain ... ie, I still have all my problems, but my brain can "handle" them better, and I just feel so much happier!! And I know the magnesium (plus methylated B's and Vit D) have greatly helped many physical symptoms including migraines. I'm just saying (IMO) that I think dehydration can happen perhaps a bit easier when one is taking a variety of supplements, and that can also contribute to headaches.

Yes, dehydration can occur before we realize it and it can escape our immediate detection. And it can definitely cause headaches, nausea, or other symptoms.
